The weather was clear, the pavement dry and the road straight. Fire enveloped one of the cars and burned beyond recognition the body of the only girl victim... Dead are James Weeda, 21, Shannon City; Kenneth Eighme, 16, Tingley, and Barbara Brown, 17, Afton. In fair condition in the Greater Community Hospital in Creston was Daniel Hudson, 18, Afton. He was the only other person riding in the two cars. He suffered a crushed chest, a fractured leg and multiple lacerations of the face. The automobiles collided on a blacktop secondary road just southeast of this small Union County town. Aripse is about 16 miles southeast of Creston. The four young people apparently had not been together before during the evening. Weeda and his cousin, Kenneth Eighme, in the same car, had been at a high school basketball game in Afton. Hudson and the Brown girl had spent the evening with her parents in Afton. Hudson and Miss Brown had recently obtained a marriage license. The flames from Hudson's burning car were so hot that the asphalt paving appeared to have caught fire. Both cars were demolished. The three dead persons and Hudson all are from farm families. Authorities said they had no reason to believe the accident was caused by wild youthful driving. But the officials were unable to advance a reason for the tragedy. "I am hoping that Hudson will be able to tell us something when he can talk," said Union County Sheriff George E. Stroman. Highway Patrolman Wayne Petersen of Mount Ayr said he could "see no cause for this accident." He said he was unable to find any skid marks leading to the crash scene. He said the cars may have been traveling 50 to 60 miles an hour just before the crash. The Highway Patrol investigation is continuing, he said. Neighbors mentioned a tire blowout, blinding headlights or possibly momentary carelessness as possible explanations for the collision. But there seem to have been no witnesses of the country road crash at approximately 11 or 11:15 p.m. First person to reach the accident scene was Bonnie Riepe, 17, a farm girl and high school student. She had attended a school basketball game at Villisca and was on her way home. She said she hopes that "I won't ever have to live through anything like that again." The two cars were without lights when she approached the accident, she said. Hudson's car was near the middle of the road. Miss Riepe stopped and got out. She said Hudson was leaning against the car. He asked her to "go and get help." She said she did not know anyone else was in the car. Flames were beginning to break out at the front end of the vehicle, she added. She drove back toward Arispe and told a farm family about the crash. Ken Nurnberg of Arispe, who soon reached the scene, said Hudson was lying in the road "5 or 6 feet from the burning car." The injured youth was moved away from the flames. Nurnberg added that "the whole front seat was in flames and fire was coming out of the side windows." Nobody then knew the girl was in the car, he said. He expressed belief that she had died of injuries before the car caught fire. Sheriff Stroman said a car smashed up in an accident sometimes catches fire when sparks caused by an electrical short ignite gasoline fumes. Nurnberg said the bodies of both Weeda and Eighme were slumped over in the other car. They apparently had been killed outright, Nurnberg added. The law enforcement officers said there was no way to tell which car was at least partly on the "wrong side" of the road. The officers said they believe the Weeda car was northbound and the Hudson car was going south. The Eighme youth, who was a sophomore at Mount Ayr High School, planned to spend the night with his brother at Arispe. Weeda and Hudson both were graduates of East Union High School, which has a high school building at Afton. They have been doing farm work. Miss Brown dropped out of the high school a few weeks ago. She was a senior at the time. Kenneth Eighme was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Eighme who live in Ringgold county, just south of the Union-Ringgold county line. He is survived by his parents; a sister, Mrs. Turbot of Creston; and two older brothers. He was a student at the Mount Ayr community high school where he was a member of the wrestling team.
