Kermit was born Nov. 25, 1926, in Champion to Otto and Christine (Koester) Belau. On Feb. 19, 1949, he married Leona Booth in Hastings. Read More	Kermit Ernst Belau, 83, of Gibbon died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010, at College View Assisted Living Center in Hastings. Kermit was born Nov. 25, 1926, in Champion to Otto and Christine (Koester) Belau. On Feb. 19, 1949, he married Leona Booth in Hastings. Survivors are: wife; sons, Tom and his wife, Chris, of Hastings and Ron and his wife, Deb, of Gibbon; grandchildren, Michael Belau and his wife, Tina, of Cleveland, Tenn., Adam Belau of Grand Island, Jason Belau and his wife, Danielle, of Lakewood, Colo., Laci Bentley and her husband, Ken, of Gibbon, Lindi Samuelson and her husband, Ryan, of Phoenix and Bekka Simpson and her husband, Jay, of Wichita, Kan.; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and sister, Iola Kohout of Hastings. He was a longtime Gibbon resident and school superintendent. He grew up in the Champion area and graduated from Chase County High School in 1943. He joined the U.S. Army in 1945 and served in Okinawa until 1947. In 1947, he joined the Army National Guard (ARNGUS) and served as platoon leader, company commander of the Hastings unit, assistant operations officer and executive tank battalion officer and taught OCS during the summers. He attained the rank of major during this service and was discharged from active duty status in 1974. Kermit and Leona made their home in Hastings. He graduated from Hastings College in 1953 and attended the University of Nebraska where he graduated with an masters degree in school administration. Starting in 1953, he taught school in Roseland for three years and then for two years was school superintendent. In 1958, he became superintendent at Gibbon Public Schools and served there for 30 years. During this time he helped build the first outstate computer network in Nebraska and was president of the Nebraska Council for Educational Television for five years. His memberships included the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, School Masters Association, Retired Military Officers Association and the NESA educational organization.
