Kermit, a former Hartford resident, was born on a farm near Chancellor on May 27, 1912, to Tom and Annie Sletten near where the Slettens homesteaded in Dakota Territory in 1876. Read More	Kermit Sletten May 27 1912 - Mar 09 2008 Kermit O. Sletten, 95, died March 9, 2008, at Sanford / USD Medical Center. Kermit, a former Hartford resident, was born on a farm near Chancellor on May 27, 1912, to Tom and Annie Sletten near where the Slettens homesteaded in Dakota Territory in 1876. He attended rural schools in that area and married Florence Rippentrop at the rural Lennox Germantown Presbyterian Church on March 21, 1936. He farmed in the Chancellor area until 1942, when he bought a farm 5 miles north of Hartford. There, Kermit and Florence resided until moving to the Lennox Good Samaritan Home in 2002. Kermit had a Grade A dairy herd and trucked livestock and grain. He received many safe driving awards for accident fee driving. His special interest was with Belgian Draft horses. He was a charter member of the Community Riders Saddle Club and the Dakota Harness Club. He and his horse friends made many trips to the draft horse sale at Waverly, Iowa. He was a 4-H Leader as well as Secretary Treasurer of the Steineke District 49 School District for more than 25 years. He was an active member of the Hartford Methodist Church and served on boards as well as helped farm the church's land. In later years, Kermit and Florence went on many bus tours throughout the United States with neighbors and friends. Kermit was well known for being able to catch a nap at the drop of a hat. Perhaps that contributed to his longevity. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Florence; six children, Roger (Jan) Sletten, LaVonne Rentschler, Darwin (Jane) Sletten, Fain Sletten, Thomas (Mary Kay) Sletten, and Brian Sletten; 14 grandchildren,; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as special friends Paul and Pam Vander Vliet. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Annie Sletten; two sisters, Francis Thill and Bernice Wilts; two brothers, Orvie Sletten and Marvin Sletten; and a son-in-law, Curtis Rentschler. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 Thursday, March 13, 2008, at the Hartford United Methodist Church, Hartford, SD. Visitation begins at noon, Wednesday with the family present to greet friends from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Following the visitation period, a Prayer Service will be held at 8:00 Wednesday evening at Miller West Funeral Chapel, 6200 W. 41 st Street.
