PERRIN Sudden and Unexpected End of a Good Woman’s Life – Funeral Services in the Presbyterian Church --- Burial at Long Cane Mrs. Kittie C. Perrin, widow of the late Colonel James M. Perrin, died at home in the village last Sunday morning after an illness of less then two days. While she had not been confined to her bed, yet she was so unwell that her son, Mr. James S. Perrin, did not return to Mississippi on last Thursday, as he had expected to do. Rising from the dinner table on Friday afternoon, she was attacked with an affection of the heart, and her family were at once alarmed. She soon became unconscious and death seemed imminent. On Saturday morning she rallied a little, and on Sunday morning she was decidedly better and became perfectly rational and talked freely. At half past eight o’clock however her heart ceased to act and the end came. On Monday morning the casket, which contained her body, was taken to the sanctuary where in life she loved to worship. The floral offerings were all that love and affection could suggest, and Dr. Wilson delivered the funeral services in the presence of a sympathetic audience. At the cemetery a final prayer was said, and the grave closed over the form of one whose life was exemplary and sincere, and whose death is greatly mourned. In her last sickness, Mrs. Perrin’s children were present. Mr. James S. Perrin had come home from Hazlehurst, Mississippi to spend the vacation from his school. Mrs. Gas(s), wife of the Reverend John Gas(s) of Charleston had spent several weeks of the summer under the parental roof, but she had been absent at Paris Mountain for two or three weeks. On hearing of her mother’s illness, she hastened back, and was with her at the last. In Mrs. Perrin’s death Abbeville will sustain a loss. Mr. James S. Perrin will return to Mississippi, and Miss Kitty Perrin will find a home in the city of Charleston with her sister, Mrs. Gas(s), and thus the last member of that branch of a distinguished family will be removed. In many respects Mrs. Perrin was a remarkable woman and her sojourn on earth had been attended by many varying scenes and incidents. She had shared many of life’s richest blessings and she was not a stranger to sorrow. In the latter part of the fifties 1850’s] she was happily married. Her surroundings were all that she could wish. Her husband was loving and devoted. She was happy in her children. She lived in a mansion whose splendor was scarcely surpassed in all this country, while a vast estate added every comfort and every luxury. Life itself seemed the very realization of a fairy tale, but in the midst of all this happiness the War and sorrow came. Her husband was among the first to enlist in the service of his country, and while valiantly leading his command, he fell mortally wounded at Chancellorsville. When peace was restored, her husband had been sacrificed to his country and their vast estate had vanished. Even her home had passed to other hands. Her husband and estate gone, with a family of small children to rear and educate, she was a widow indeed. But with a true heart she met her bereavement and with rare determination she battled bravely with adverse circumstances. While imparting wholesome lessons in the varied duties of life she reared her children in honor and gave to each the advantages of a good education. When all had attained the estate of womanhood and manhood, and when life was again bright, and when the mind’s eye could peer into the dim future and see pleasure – while one daughter was happily married, another daughter greatly beloved and adored as she entered the threshold of a beautiful womanhood – even while in apparent health and strength –was stricken down, leaving with us only the fragrant memory of a gentle spirit and whole heart. Mrs. Perrin was noted for her decision of character, her good judgment, her kindness of heart, and her Christian life. In all that she did she was sincere and true; In her friendships she was constant and faithful; In her daily life she was generous to the erring and loving to the good. Imbued with deep Christian character, she made no effort to create impressions. She did what she conceived to be right. In her religion she was unimpassioned. Hers was a Christianity based upon conviction of right and wrong – a religion of principle – and at heart she was all that she seemed to be. Honest and plain of speech, she was ever ready to approve the right and discourage whatever was wrong – she was ever ready to lend a helping hand to those who might need it.
