Sees Bright Prospects for Tire Industry That there is no longer any basis for pessimism as to the future of the automobile tire and accessory industries was forcefully brought out in a speech by Judge L.M. Kyes secretary of the McGraw Tire & Rubber Company at a banquet of the company's sales organization held recently at the Fort Pitt Hotel Pittsburgh, Pa. The banquet was part of the annual McGraw sales convention which took place at East Palestine Ohio. Judge Kyes outlined at length the national trade conditions affecting production in the automobile and related industries speaking in part as follows There is no question about either the present or future of the tire industry Commandeering the motor vehicle the gasoline supply and limitation of production the three disturbing things have all been satisfactorily settled The capability of the motor industry to produce all army requirements of munition as well as transportation has eliminated all question of commandeering Increased prices for petroleum products has brought about a big increase in oil production so that the country has an ample supply of gasoline. The small percentage of steel requirements of the motor industry as compared with total steel production and the sheer necessity of the motor car and truck as both a peace and war essential to relieve commercial traffic congestion and carry on actual war operations will protect production at all times. Grandfather Kyes was a very bright, outgoing man with a wonderful, unmistakable booming laugh. When I was small, this was great EXCEPT when he took me to the movies; then it was embarrassing -- because everybody in East Palestine knew when he was in the movie theater. I loved to go to his office and "help" his assistants (secretaries, whatever) Sadie and Myrtle. I learned early that there were three kinds of clients -- the corporates, the regulars, and the specials (he knew that the specials never would, never could pay him back, but he took them anyway) Submitted by Katharine Kyes Leab

LAFAYETTE KYES DIES SUDDENLY Stricken with a heart attack Wednesday morning, Lafayette Martin Kyes, 75, father of Roger M. Kyes, former assistant secretary of defense under President Eisenhower, died Wednesday morning at his winter home here. Mr. and Mr. Kyes had arrived in Winter Haven only three days ago to spend the winter here, as had been their custom for many years. A native of Unity, Ohio, he had been a practicing attorney at East Palestine, Ohio, for fifty years. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Knights Templar, the I. O. O. F. and the Palestine Kiwanis Club. In addition to his son, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Myra E. Kyes, who accompanied him here. Services were held Wednesday night from the Ott-Laughlin Chapel and with the Rev. Victor Hitchcock officiating. The body was then sent to East Palestine for additional services and burial.
ATTY. L. M. KYES A large concourse of friends gathered at the Methodist Church Monday afternoon to pay final respects to the late Atty. L. M. Kyes whose death took place Nov. 17 at Winter Haven, Fla. In well chosen words, the Rev. Herbert Massey, the officiating clergyman, gave comfort to the bereaved ones in dwelling largely on the theme of Immortality. A male trio, composed of Charles Dodd, John Wilhelm and James Reid rendered two musical numbers: "Rock of Ages" and "The Lord is my Shepherd," with Mrs. MacKinnon at the organ. Honorary bearers at the commitment service in Glenview Cemetery were members of the Colombiana Bar Association, some 24 of whom were present at the service. Active bearers were: Atty. Lynn Riddle of Lisbon, Carl Feiger of New Springfield, Dwight Morris, Earl Morris, Dr. D. E. Rose, E. H. McClure, Otto Geiger and Stephen Bozick, all of this city. A Word in Passing That L. M. Kyes had made a deep impress on this whole area was amply attested by a host of friends who gathered Saturday and Sunday at the North Market Street home, and later at the final services at the church. One driving ambition had characterized his whole career in this city--a continued effort to make East Palestine a larger and better place in which to live. No program looking towards an advancement of community welfare but had his active support. His life was an open book; his sympathy for the less fortunate was unquestioned; and his passing is an occasion for community regret. Years will come and go, and many of them will have passed ere the final impression of the impact of L. M. Kyes on the local annals will have become a matter of history. (General affidavit included in Civil War Pension application) January 5, 1891 I am the claimant in the above entitled claim for pension under Act of June 27, 1890. In reply to the Department letter dated November 20, 1890 I have respectfully to state that the exact date of the birth of the child was May 29, 1879 and that said child was named Hartley Lafayette but several years thereafter the name Hartley was dropped and said child has been and is now known as Lafayette Kyes. I am unable to furnish the affidavit of the person in error explaining discrepancy for the reason that affiant Mary Jones is deceased. I respectfully request that the affidavit of Rosa Ziegler be accepted as proof of the birth of said child. Elizabeth Kyes
