Description	:	Civil War Veteran, enlisted on Aug. 6, 1862 with Co. D of the 35th IA Infantry. Lafayette sustained a slight head wound during the battle of Tupelo on July 14, 1864. He was discharged Aug. 10, 1865 as Corporal. The following was taken from his obituary in the York Republican 4 May 1892 page 3: Head quarters Robert Anderson Post No. 82, Department of G.A.E. Comrade Lafayette Metcalf was one of our best citizens , and possessed in a large degree the characteristics of a good soldier. Though suffering from disabilities that would entitle him to a pension, he was too self reliant to apply so long as he could still support himself and family by hard work. A few months ago, realizing that his time here was short and desiring to provide for his children soon to be left orphaned, he made an application and was examined by the Pension Board only the day before death. Thus, another of our comrades has been mustered in the Grand Army above. Wherefore we would offer the following resolutions: Resolved, First that in the death of Comrade Metcalf our post has lost an esteemed member, our community an upright, useful and patriotic citizen and his family a tender and devoted parent. Second, That we, his surviving comrades, will cherish his memory until we too obey the summons of our Supreme Commander. Third, that we extend our sympathy to his orphaned children, and we will ever regard them as wards of our post. Fourth, That this obituary and resolutions be spread upon the minutes of the Post and a copy furnished to each of our local papers, The National Tribune and the family of our deceased comrade, By order of Post .
