Description	:	L. Ruple Harley Sr., 94, of Greenwood, widower of Billie Davis Harley, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, at his home. Born in Orangeburg, he was a son of the late Irvin S. and Fannie Olivia Ruple Harley. He was a graduate of Wofford College and the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science. Ruple Harley Sr., 94, of Greenwood, widower of Billie Davis Harley, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, at his home. Born in Orangeburg, he was a son of the late Irvin S. and Fannie Olivia Ruple Harley. He was a graduate of Wofford College and the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science. Mr. Harley founded Harley Funeral Home in 1947, serving Greenwood and surrounding communities with dignity and compassion for many years until he was forced to slow down due to declining health. His passion for service to others was instilled in his son and grandson, who continue his legacy today as second- and third-generation funeral directors, operating the family business. He served as past president of the S.C. State Board of Funeral Service and the S.C. Funeral Directors Association. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre and, after the war, continued his service in the Army Reserves, retiring as a major. He was a member of American Legion Post 20, Forty and Eight, the Retired Officers Association and the V.F.W. He was a member of the Greenwood Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of Lodge 91 A.F.M. and was a Hejaz Shriner, serving as past president of the Hejaz Temple. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church. Surviving are a son, L. Ruple Harley Jr. and his wife, Karen, of Ninety Six; grandchildren L. Ruple Harley III and his wife, Carol, of Ninety Six, Allison Harley Cobb and her husband, Michael, of Alpharetta, Ga., and Aaron Counts and his wife, Amanda, of Hermitage, Tenn.; great-grandchildren Davis Renee Harley of Myrtle Beach, Ben Harley of Ninety Six, Kerri Jones of Greenwood, Hampton Cobb, Davis Cobb and AliGrace Cobb, all of Alpharetta; and a sister, Frances H. Brown of Manning. In addition to his wife of 68 years, he was also preceded in death by a son, Henry Clifton Harley II, and 11 of his 12 siblings. Sincere appreciation is extended to the angels who so lovingly cared for Mr. Harley over the past year: Doretta Sprowl, Lillie Sprowl, Arlene Morgan and, just recently, Shirley Jones. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, at Main Street United Methodist Church, with Pastor Phil Thrailkill officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Oakbrook Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Jim Antley, Travis Brown, John H. Davis Jr., David Hutto, Mark Hutto and Jay Hutto. Honorary escort will be the staff and former staff of Harley Funeral Home and Crematory and members of the S.C. Funeral Directors Association. Viewing will be held at Harley Funeral Home on Friday and Saturday. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Sunday. The family will greet friends at Oakbrook immediately following the interment service. Family members are at their respective homes.
