Landis Eldon Nelson was born on Saturday, September 25, 1926 to Emer and Esther (Anderson) Nelson on a farm north of Lily, South Dakota. He was baptized and confirmed at Lily Lutheran Church. He attended school in Lily and graduated from Lily High School in 1945. In June 1945 he entered the U.S. Army and served until January 1947 and then returned back to the Lily area where he worked as a farmer and house mover. In January 1950 he joined the South Dakota National Guard in Webster. In September 1950 he was called to active duty during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Ft. Carson, Colorado and Ft. Richardson, Alaska. He returned home from active duty in July 1952. He was united in marriage to Mae Rohde on January 16, 1954 at Webster, South Dakota. The couple lived at Webster. Landis worked as a house mover until May 1958 when he became full-time with the National Guard. He retired in December 1984 and had attained the rank of Sergeant Major. He entered Bethesda Home in Webster in November 2009. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Webster. He was a Life-Member of Herbert McKennett Post 40 American Legion in Webster. He enjoyed hunting and ice fishing, gardening, planting trees and puttering around in his shop where he made fish shacks. Landis passed away on Friday, November 30, 2012 at Webster, South Dakota at the age of 86 years, 2 months and 5 days. Survivors include his wife, Mae of Webster; one son, Doug (Cindy) Nelson of Webster, SD; one daughter, Lori (Lowell) Glanzman of Pierre, SD; one brother, Wendell Nelson of California; one sister, Elaine Solberg of Sioux Falls, SD; two granddaughters, Jennifer and Traci; and two great grandsons, Layne and Chase. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Jeff, Boyd, Dulley and Vernon.
