Landon was serving in a branch of the U.S. Army stationed in England during World War II. Landon was discharged from the 9th Air Force after attaining the rank of Tech. Sergeant in 1945 and came back to Piney River, Nelson County to his job at American Cyanamid Company. He was the only child of Seth White head (son of Cubus Whitehead and Rebecca Waddill Whitehead) and Annie Sue Hill White head. Seth had four brothers; Dr. Wade Hampton Whitehead (named for the Civil War General that his father served under), John Cary White head, Fleming Whitehead, and Littleberry White head. All but Wade were farmers. Wade graduated from William and Mary College and became a doctor. He was drafted into the army and was to be shipped out to Europe from New York, but came down with the flu and died. Seth also had five sisters. Their names were Virginia, Isabella, Henrianne, Laura Estelle, Julia O'Neill, and Lottie May. Landon's mother, Annie Sue Whitehead was the daughter of John J. Hill. He was the Nelson County magistrate and surveyor from 1892 t 1916. The Hill's were surveyors for many years In 1808, William A. Hill became the first count land surveyor. He served in this position until 1837. John H. Hill served in the same capacity from 1837 to 1861. Then William Hill, the son of William A. Hill served as the county surveyor from 1861 to 1892. Annie Sue Hill Whitehead's mother was Rose Mantiply. Annie Sue had two sisters (Sally and Ruth) and five brothers (Ben, Nelson, Cyrus, Sam and John). Landon and I have four children (Ronald Landon, Murray Seth, Barbara Joyce, and Mary Hill). We have eight grandchildren (Kris Whitehead, Clarke Whitehead, Robert Whitehead, Pamela Faust, Brian Faust, Katie Whitehead David Whitehead, and Samuel Whitehead. Murray lives with his wife (Dr. Miranda Breitt) and their daughter (Katie) in the Whitehead Home house Ronald lives in Alexandria with his wife (Barbara Clarke Whitehead) and their sons (Clarke and Robert). Barbara and her husband (Tom Faust Sheriff of Arlington County) live in Arlington, Virginia with their children (Pamela and Brian). Mark and his wife (Joanne Emanuele Whitehead) live with their children (David and Samuel) in the house that Annie Sue and Seth built. The families mentioned here served their country from the Revolutionary War to the Vietnam War. Nathan Hill received land in Nelson County as his reward for fighting in the Revolutionary War. Cubus Whitehead fought in the Civil War. Sam Hill served in the U.S. Marines during World War I. Dr. Hampton Wade Whitehead also served in World War I. Then Landon Hill Whitehead served in World War II and took part in the Normandy Landing in Europe. His son Ronald Landon White head served in the Army during the Vietnam War. The Whitehead's can trace their lineage back to Whitehead family of Lancashire, England. Next we hear of a John Whitehead in New Kent County, who married Sarah Burcher. They moved to Amherst County in 1760. They had sixteen children. Most of the Whiteheads hereabout are descended from this couple. My father was Harker Brown from Leeds in Yorkshire, England. He married my mother Winniefred O'Reilly of London, England. My mother came to live with us after Landon died (1981).
