Huffman, which occurred at his residence on Princess Anne street on Sunday evening at five minutes past one o'clock, has cast a gloom over our entire community. He had been sick for nearly a year, but was not confined to his bed but for the past three months. His sufferings have been great, but he bore them with Christian patience and resignation. He realized that he was in the hands of a Heavenly Father, "who was too wise to err and too good to be unkind," and although he was bound to his family and friends by the strongest and tenderest earthly ties, he expressed his entire willingness to obey the summons of death. He retained his consciousness until within a short time before his "peaceful passage over the river of death." Mr. Huffman was in the 63d year of his age, and had passed his long life of usefulness in the town of Fredericksburg. He was a leading member of the Methodist Church in which for many years he held prominent positions. He was for several years Superintendent of the Sunday School, and in all the positions he held he proved himself an efficient worker for the Master, and set a Christian example worthy of the imitation of the most pious. For several years he was a member of the Common Council of Fredericksburg, in which body he served well and faithfully his constituents. Since the war and at the time of his death, he was Collector of the city taxes, the duties of which office he discharged to the satisfaction of the corporate authorities. At the organization of the free schools in town he was selected by the Board of Education at Richmond as a school trustee, and upon the organization of the Board of Trustees he was elected secretary of the Board. In these positions he was active and efficient and took great interest in the progress of the free school system in town. He leaves a wife and four children. His funeral will take place from the Methodist church on George street this evening at 4 o'clock.
