He was a former longtime resident of Woodfield, Md., and the beloved husband of 58 years to Mary Woodfield Williams, who preceded him in death in 2007. Read More	Lansdale Boyer "Lanny" Williams, Sr., 92, died Saturday, January 21, 2017, at Lorien Assisted Living, Mount Airy, Md. He was a former longtime resident of Woodfield, Md., and the beloved husband of 58 years to Mary Woodfield Williams, who preceded him in death in 2007. He was her devoted caregiver in the last few years of her life.Born August 7, 1924 to the late Norman Lansdale and Hilda Mae Watkins Williams of Cedar Heights , Maryland. Lansdale grew up in a farming family in Cedar Grove, with one sister S. Louise Mullinix, and one brother, J. Crawford Williams. His parents and siblings preceed him in death.In his youth he attended Salem Methodist Church, and spent as much time as possible playing baseball. He attended Cedar Grove Elementary and Damascus High Schools. In 1942 he used the war as an excuse to leave the farm, and went to work for the Naval Gun Factory, located at the Navy Yard in Washington, DC. He completed his apprenticeship as a machinist in 1944. "Lanny" told of picking up German prisoners of war, to work on the farm, from the camp located in Washington Grove, on his way home from working 3rd shift. At the end of the war he was laid off, but after a short time was re-employed by the Navy, at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in White Oak, from which he retired in 1980. September 5, 1948 he married the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth Woodfield, and settled in the Woodfield community. Through the years he was a member of the Wesley Grove United Methodist Church, supporting all of the church activities such as church dinners, Methodist Men, and for a time sang in the choir. He kept an association with his passion of baseball through the years, both as a player and coach. He coached Little League baseball and girl's softball for many years, and was still playing softball for the Tom and Ray's team in his 40's. After his retirement from NOL, he worked for Marsh-McBurney first in Gaithersburg and later moved with them to Frederick. Later in life he enjoyed traveling with the Damascus Travel Club to Hawaii and Europe, as well as trips within the US. After he finally retired, Lanny took up woodworking providing decorative items for family, friends and the church's Christmas Bazaar. He also enjoyed fishing from his Ocean City vacation home competing with the neighbors for the biggest catch. He enjoyed duck pin bowling and cheered on the Redskins and Nationals.Surviving are four children: Lansdale B. Williams, Jr. and wife Janet of Clayton, NC, Susan W. Heslin and husband James of Frederick, Mary Lynn Welch and husband Kurt of Damascus and Lisa W. Clark and husband Greg of Rocky Mount, NC.; eight grandchildren: Jennifer M. Guy and husband Steve of Raleigh, NC, Mary E. Lee and husband Gary of Middleburg, VA, Christopher L. Williams and wife Michelle of Garner, NC, Rachel W. Kemp of Frederick, Laura C. Haithcock and husband Troy of Goldsboro, NC, Natalie L. Marshall and husband Jack of Mt. Airy, Zackary L. Clark of Raleigh, NC and Tyler W. Clark of Rocky Mount NC. Twelve great-grandchildren: Dakota Lee, Colby Guy, Spencer Lee, Owen Williams, Garrett Guy, Bryson Guy, Aeden Williams, John Marshall, V., Josephine Williams, Adeline Williams, Chase Marshall and Evan Haithcock. And a large extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by a great- grandson Gavin Guy.Friends may call 3-5 & 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, January 24, at Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus, Maryland 20872. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 25 at Wesley Grove United Methodist Church, 23640 Woodfield Road, Gaithersburg, Maryland 20882, with Reverend Karen Davis, his pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lanny's name to the Wesley Grove United Methodist Church, 23640 Woodfield Road, Gaithersburg, MD 20882.
