His funeral service will be 2 PM Friday, December 19, 2014 at Palestine United Methodist Church with Rev. Kevin McCormac and Rev. Delane Burris officiating. A visitation time for friends will be held at the church on Friday from 1 until 2 prior to the funeral service. Born October 21, 1918 in Stanly County, NC, he was the son of the late Palmer D. Fesperman and Sallie Vanhoy Fesperman and was a retired mechanic. He was educated at the Wiscassett School. He attended Palestine United Methodist Church. Mr. Fesperman was a veteran of the US Army having served in WWII. He served in heavy combat in North Africa and then Silicy, where he was wounded in combat. He earned the European-African-Mediterranean Service Medal with two campaign stars, the American Campaign Service Medal and the Army Good Conduct Service Medal. He is decorated with the Purple Heart Medal and Bronze Star Medal. He also earned the Combat Infantryman Badge. Upon returning to Albemarle after his severe wounds in Silicy, Mr. Fesperman started honoring his comrades by performing military rites at their funerals. He was a charter member of the Stanly County Disabled American Veterans-Chapter 12 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2908 of Albemarle and was the last living charter member of both. It is conservatively estimated that he has folded over 5,000 US flags and presented them to the next of kin at veterans’ funerals over the last 60 years. Mr. Fesperman was a 50 year member of the Stanly County American Legion and served in various offices of the Disabled American Veterans-Chapter 12, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2908 of Albemarle, and the Stanly County Veterans Council, including the office of commander in the DAV and VFW. For decades he served as the DAV Chapter 12 Ritual Team Commander. He devoted a large portion of his life to the DAV Ritual Team and was its biggest supporter throughout his lifetime.
