He had finished a full day's work, repairing damage from the recent Missouri River flood. Larry was born on February 19, 1942 at rural Sidney, IA; the son of Raymond N. and Vera B. (Johnson) Whitehead. He attended school in Sidney and graduated from the Sidney High School with the Class of 1960. He then attended Peru State College for a short time. He was united in marriage to Lois J. Coslett on November 23, 1963 at the former E and R Church in Hamburg, IA. They shared over 48 years of their lives together before Larry's passing. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge having served as Worshipful Master, and a member of L.I.C.A. (Land Improvement Contractors Assn.) where he served as the state president. He was a former member and past-president of the Eagles Aerie #968 in Nebraska City. He served on the building committee for the United Trinity Church in Hamburg, and helped move the old E & R church to its current location on Highway 275. He was a former member of the Sidney Presbyterian Church and the Victory Life Church. Larry spent his life taking care of the land. He was especially proud to farm the land his grandfather Johnson from Denmark purchased in 1909. After several years of farming, his business expanded to include land improvement construction. He built many terraces, ditches, ponds, wetlands and levees throughout this area. When he was called on for emergency flood control, he often "saved the day". Larry's love of flying prompted him to get his pilot's license, and he has been flying since 1994 . He is survived by his wife Lois Whitehead of rural Sidney, IA; son Bryan Whitehead and wife Juli of rural Sidney, IA; daughters: Marty Lea Garcia and husband Anthony of Parker, CO and Wendy Doty and husband Doug of Parnell, IA; 8 grandchildren: Nathan, Elizabeth, Emily and Abigail Whitehead; Colton Garcia; Harley, Raema and Jaci Doty; brothers: Ross Whitehead of Tucson, AZ; Richard Whitehead and wife Margie of Sidney, IA; Glenn Whitehead and wife Myra of Riverton, IA; sister Margie Brumels and husband Dale of Omaha, NE; brothers and sisters-in-law: Marilyn and Harlan Holliman of Hamburg, IA and Linda and Bill Petry of Lewisburg, PA; other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Vera Whitehead and sister-in-law Betty Whitehead. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 27, 2012 at the Calvary Community Church in Nebraska City with Rev. Norman Anderson officiating; burial will follow at the Riverton Cemetery in Riverton, IA. The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, July 26 at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg. A Masonic Service will be held Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA. Memorials may be given to: Save the Hamburg Levee Project or to the donors favorite Church or charity.
