His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at the Brentford Congregational United Church of Christ in Brentford, SD. Reverend Tim Fugman and Pastor Lorah Houser Jankord will officiate. Burial will follow at the Mellette Cemetery in Mellette, SD. Visitation will be Wednesday, from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m., at the Eastern Star Chapel in Redfield with Pastor Lorah Houser Jankord officiating a Prayer Service at 3:30 p.m. A second visitation will be Wednesday, from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m., at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield. A Prayer Service with Masonic Rites will begin at 6:00 p.m. with Pastor Lorah Houser Jankord. Arrangements have been entrusted with Hyke Funeral Home (www.hykefuneralhome.com). Larry Carl Clausen was born October 7, 1938 to Mathias (Matt) Aasmus Clausen and Esther Mae (LaBay) Clausen in Aberdeen, SD. He was baptized in the Methodist Church in Ashton, but was a lifelong member of the Brentford Congregational UCC. He grew up on the family farm in the Brentford/Turton area. He started school in Brentford, but transferred to country school in the Clifton Township until 8th grade. He returned to Brentford for High School where he graduated in 1956. While in school, he played basketball, enjoyed school dances, and attended Boys State. Larry often participated in out of school activities including roller skating, Armadale Island dances, swimming, rodeo, 4-H and FFA. He helped many local farmer and even hauled coal from Mellette to keep the school in Brentford heated. He attended South Dakota State College in Brookings where he won the “blackest beard” contest for Hobo Day and was on the Rodeo Team. He transferred to Black Hills State where he played football and took his favorite class, ballroom dancing. In 1961 he transferred to Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen. He was one course and practice teaching short of completion when the school changed scheduling and he was unable to work, farm, and attend school. In April 1961, he married Carman Finch in Fargo, ND. They raised their 3 children (Carrie, Billy, and Mike) near Brentford and Larry worked at the elevator, the locker, and farmed. He also served on the Tetonka Township and Cenex Boards and was a Brentford Volunteer Fireman. Larry continued to live on the farm until his health conditions necessitated a move to Redfield. Larry was initiated into the Brentford Masonic Lodge #176 on January 15, 1962 and transferred to Redfield #34 when Brentford closed. He had also been a member of the York Lodge, Scottish Rite, and Yelduz Shrine where he was a Chanter and then a Clown for many years. He believed strongly in the Masonic organizations and supported the activities and charities of these Masonic bodies as he was able. One of the activities he enjoyed most throughout his life was working with horses. In 1975, he and his son Billy purchased a team of registered Percheron mares and began driving again. He attended the first SD Draft Horse & Mule Breeders Association and remained a member his entire life. “Dry Run Percherons” became the registered herd name. Larry was a founding member of the Great Plains Select Percheron Association. He enjoyed taking his horses to parades, giving wagon rides, attending wagon trains in the Black Hills and Badlands and showing Percherons at the National Western Stock Show and SD State Fair. He rarely missed the Draft Horse sale in Waverly, IA and loved meeting friends all over the US & Canada. Larry lived life to the fullest, believed in looking ahead, and never giving up. When bad things happen, Larry knew you had to just keep living life! Larry is survived by his daughter, Carrie Clausen Hansen & husband Rod of Turton and son Mike & Vonda Clausen of Newell; grandchildren BJ & Katie Hansen, Jenae Hansen, Carli Hansen, Matt Clausen, and Conner Clausen; and great-grandchildren Hudson, Gage, & Remi. He is also survived by niece Shelly Taskin & family, nephew Ryan Diebert, many cousins, friends, Masonic brothers and the caring staff at the Eastern Star Home. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, son Billy, sister Lois and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
