Hope Cemetery at Mapleton, Iowa, with military graveside honors provided by V.F.W. Post 2020 of Battle Creek, Iowa, and American Legion Grimsley-Thayer Post 502 of Castana, Iowa. Larry Hieber was born Dec. 11, 1934, at Sioux City, the son of Edgar and Marie (Ernst) Hieber. His mother and sister died when Larry was just two years old. His father later married Juanita Schoenherr and gave Larry two brothers and two sisters. Larry was raised in Monona County and later moved with his family to Battle Creek, Iowa, when his parents opened a grocery store there. He graduated from Battle Creek High School with the class of 1954. On May 21, 1954, Larry was united in marriage to Wanda Schumacher. To this union, five children were born. Also in 1954, he joined the U.S. Army and served his country during the Korean War, stationed in Germany. Larry loved the land and his life's work in farming. His family all shared in the responsibility of the work on the farm and his beloved wife was always there to feed them all well. Hunting was a priority in his life, especially deer hunting. He also found pleasure in time spent fishing. Every spring, Larry was recognized for his skills at mushroom hunting. The greatest passion in his life, however, was his family whom he was "always there for." Wanda and Larry owned and operated Hiebers Inn in Battle Creek from 1981 to 1997 and for the last three years have managed the Maple Motel in Mapleton. He was a member of the American Legion Grimsley-Thayer Post 502 of Castana, and the V.F.W. Post 2020 of Battle Creek. He was especially proud when he was chosen as Commander of his V.F.W Post. Those survivors left to cherish their memories of Larry include Wanda, his wife of 54 years; five children, Dan (Kim) Hieber of Castana, Denise (James) Funderman of Battle Creek, Diane (Tom) Cooper, also of Battle Creek, Denita Hieber of Danbury, Iowa, and Deb (Shawn) Thies of Ida Grove, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nancy (Roger) Albers of Mapleton, Iowa, and Joan Chandler of Castana, Iowa; a brother, Vincent and Wanda of Magnolia, Iowa; and many other family members and good friends. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Marie and Edgar and his mother Juanita; his brother, Jack who died Oct. 17, 1966, in Vietnam; and his brother-in-law, Artie Schumacher.
