Description	:	Larry Leo Thies of Java graduated from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City with a degree in Metallurgic Engineering. For a short time he worked for the John Deere Company in Illinois before returning to take over the family farm. Farming was the life he knew and preferred. His life was wrapped around all the aspects of running a farm and he enjoyed raising cattle, caring for his children and grandchildren, and reading. "We had years of nothing and years of bumper crops, but Larry loved it," his wife Carol said. Larry kept at his farming until he became ill last August. He died Monday, Jan. 28, 2008, at the Linton Hospital in Linton, N.D., at the age of 65. He was born June 15, 1942, on a farm in rural Campbell County to Levi and Kate (Brockel) Thies. Two years later they moved to the present farm. He attended grade school at the rural Bertsch School a quarter of a mile from the farm. He attended Selby Area High School and graduated in 1959. While attending the School of Mines he spent summers working on the family farm and also at the Anaconda mine in Anaconda, Mont. He was in Aberdeen with friends when he met Carol Cowles, who was attending college in Aberdeen and friends celebrated her birthday by taking her out to a restaurant. Larry and his friends, in the next booth, joined the party and Carol and Larry both liked what they saw in each other. It was in December of 1965 and they were married Oct. 8, 1966, in her hometown of Mellette. "Larry usually didn't say a lot unless he had something to say," Carol said in describing Larry. He is survived by his wife Carol of Java; two sons, Dwayne (Lorrie) Thies of Rockford, Ill., and Greg (Billie Jo) Thies of Winnemucca, Nev.; two daughters, Sherrie (Howard Jr.) Allyn of Laramie, Wyo., and Melissa (Tim) Flor of Pierre; eight grandchildren; one brother, Floyd (Beverly) Thies of Algona, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents, a sister Catherine in infancy, and a grandson Jaxon Flor in infancy preceded him in death. Funeral services for Larry were Saturday, Feb. 2, at St. John Lutheran Church in Selby with the Rev. Dennis Fonkert officiating. Casketbearers were Ken Brockel, Robert Braach, Lonald Bauer, Larue Moak and grandchildren April McKinney, Carol Ann Allyn, Christopher Dauenbaugh and Brittany Dauenbaugh. Honorary bearers were grandchildren Jaden Flor, Trinity Flor, Zoey Thies ad Nicholas Thies. Ray Bucklin and Orvil Kuehl were ushers. Burial was in Selby Memorial Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Mobridge Tribune February 6, 2008
