Larry Lyle Hintz was born Aug. 14, 1941, in Tecumseh, Mich., to Wayne and Ethel (Fry) Hintz. His father served in the U.S. Air Force, so the family moved around quite often. He graduated from high school in Guam in 1960. Upon graduation, he was drafted by the Kokomo Dodgers, a double A baseball team for the Chicago White Soxs. Before he could go on to the major leagues, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He fought for our country in the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1966. He then returned to his parent's home in Bunker Hill, Ind. He worked for the Corps of Engineers, then moved to the Ute area in 1967. He worked as a surveyor for Virtue Engineering, which later became Sunquist Engineering in Onawa, Iowa. He worked for Sunquist Engineering until his death. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. A devout Catholic, his faith and love of his community led him to serve as a city councilman. He also was a volunteer emergency medical technician and an active member of the American Legion Aaby Post 442. He played on the Ute Navaho baseball team from 1977 to 1988. He taught catechism for the Catholic Youth Organization and several emergency medical technical classes. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Ethel Hintz; an infant brother, Dickie Hintz; a sister-in-law, Kay Hintz; a son-in-law, Everett Hartigan; three brothers-in-law, Marvin Mauch, Lloyd Snow and Joe Carlson; a nephew, Jimmy Carlson; his mother and father-in-law, Margaret (McCall) and Dale Barnes; and an infant sister-in-law, Betty Barnes.
