The family wishes to express their gratitude to Steve Johannsen, former Hawardenite, who offered immeasurable support to Larry and his family. Larry was born Feb. 20, 1946, in Hawarden to Lawrence S. Smith and Mildred (Walters) Smith. He graduated from West Sioux High School in 1964. Larry was active in sports, participating in baseball, basketball, track, wrestling and football. Larry never forgot the 1962-63 football seasons. He could still quote statistics for a lot of the games. After graduation, he attended Morningside College in Sioux City where he had a football scholarship. In 1965, Larry enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp. He served in Vietnam from June 1966 through July 1967. He was honorably discharged in the fall of 1967, achieving the rank of Corporal E4. Larry then attended South Dakota State University in Vermillion, SD, for three years, majoring in math and playing football one season. In 1972, Larry headed to Denver, CO, where he lived for seven years and worked in the printing and construction businesses. He then moved to Montrose in 1979 where he worked in all areas of construction. Finish work was his expertise. He once constructed a dome home and worked on Tom Cruise’s home in Telluride, CO. He liked telling the story of redoing Nicole Kidman’s closet for her three times. Larry enjoyed the Colorado scenery, fishing for trout and bowling. Watching NASCAR races, the Broncos and Packers were also great pass times. He was fond of his nieces and nephew and loved hearing about his great nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Dennis Ridout and an infant brother Ronald. Left to cherish his memory are his sisters Carla Ridout of Estherville and Paula (Brad) Oltrogge of Madison, WI; nephew Travis Ridout (wife Carolyn Ross) and their children, Lorelei, Julianne and Isaac; niece Ashley Ridout-Norris and husband, Aaron Norris, and their children, Ophelia and Camille; niece, Lindsay (Casey) Downing and their son, Ryker.
