Smoke passed peacefully Saturday April 21st , 2012, at his home in Elkader, with his family by his side. Larry "Smoke" William Moore was born on May 20, 1941, in Volga, IA, son of Bill and Bonnie Irene Peterman Moore. Smoke grew up in Volga, and following his graduation from Volga High School, he married the love of his life, Charlotte. The couple moved to Cedar Rapids where he worked for Quaker Oats and Deer Born Brass. They became the proud parents of two sons, Aaron and Chad. After 17 years of living in Cedar Rapids, they moved to Elkader. Smoke held various positions; he served as a police officer in Elkader and Garnavillo, worked on the Elkader Street Department and was a custodian for the Elkader Central Schools System for many years. He touched and guided the lives of countless youth – always had a smile and a kind word for kids. It was not unusual to see him delivering birthday gifts, Easter Baskets or whatever, or taking kids to different sporting events. – He was definitely their protector. Through the years, Smoke and Charlotte were foster parents for over 30 young men. He lived his life with family and friends around him. With great pride Smoke loved watching his children and grandchildren playing sports and taking part in their activities. Among the many activities he enjoyed were hunting morel mushrooms and ginseng. He was an avid lover of sports, especially the Chicago Cubs, the Chicago Bears, and he was a huge fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. Visiting the local establishments to have a cold one and shoot the breeze with friends (he did not know any strangers) rated high on his list. Smoke is survived by his wife of 51 years, Charlotte (Miller) Moore; two sons Aaron (JoLynn) Moore of Guttenberg, IA and Chad (Jade) Moore of Beijing China; six grandchildren Jace, Abrianna, and JayLynn Moore of Guttenberg; Samuel DeBoer of Sibley, IA, Eli Penningroth-Moore of Madison, WI and Amethya Moore of Beijing, China; two sisters, Maxine (Chuck Greathouse) Stepp of Ft. Collins, CO and Kay (Jerry) Copeland of Cedar Rapids, IA; a brother in law, Calvin Way of Volga, IA; numerous nieces, nephews and many many friends. Smoke was preceded by his parents and sister Norma Way.
