He had fulfilled his five - year requirement on the north one half of the Northwest quarter and the north one half of the north east quarter of Section 20 of Township 138, Range 85. Minnie (Olson) Olin, who had arrived from Chicago in 1905, had also filed her claim on the south one half of the north east quarter and the south one half of the Northwest quarter of Section 20 of Township 138, range 85. Her patent was finalized on May 25, 1912. Minnie's brother Nels had also filed on a claim nearby. Lars and Minnie were married on April 6, 1906. Six children were born to this union. They were: Lambert Melvin (born February 2, 1907 and died January 19, 1917), Agnes (born October 5, 1908 and died October 10, 1908), Alf Lennard (born October 6, 1909 and died January 15, 1910), Myrtle Agnus (born 1911 and died 1923), Alf Leonard (born 1913 and died October 1961) and Orval Lars (born November 1916 and died August 1995). Through the years of their farming life, they acquired several other portions of land. They came to own all of the sections 17, 19, 20 and the Northwest and Southwest quarters of 21 and the North one half of section 28, Township 138, range 85. Lars and Minnie moved in to their home in Almont in 1943. Lars passed away in June 1944. Minnie continue to live in Almont until her death in July 1961. During this time, their son Alf continued to farm the land until his death in October 1961. His younger brother Orval and wife Ruth (Willman) then moved home to take over the farming duties. They built a new home on the East side of the county road in 1962 in the family continued the farming operation, while Ruth was teaching in New Salem. Dennis, their oldest son, graduated from New Salem in 1965, and continued farming with his dad. He married Carole Zeutschel in 1967, and they lived in a trailer house located on the north side of the new home. In 1973 Ruth and Orval built a new home at 303 S. 4th Street in New Salem. Ruth continues to reside there. Dennis and Carol then moved into the farm home with their two children, Sandra and Darrin. Orval continued to help with the farming duties until the day he passed away in 1995. Dennis and Carol are presently purchasing the farm land from Ruth. The farm is still in its entirety except the Northwest quarter of 21 was sold to a neighbor.
