Peterson (28, Sweden), single, was living and working for the Hillson family in the 1880 United States Census (03 June 1880), for Dix Township, Ford County, Illinois (page 6, dwelling 51). They were first cousins of his future wife. He and Martha Johannesdatter Sæberg were married in Paxton, Ford County, Illinois on 19 October 1887. They were members of the Pontoppidan Lutheran Church. The Peterson family is found in the 1900 United States Federal Census (29 June 1900) for East Bend Township, Champaign County, Illinois (sheet 12A, dwelling # 217). N. Peter Peterson (48, Oct 1851 Sweden) and his wife, Martha Peterson (38, June 1861 Norway) had been married 13 years and had five children, all living: Clara N. Peterson (11, July 1888 Illinois) Charley J. Peterson (10, Aug 1889 Illinois), Anna M. Peterson (7, Oct 1892 Illinois), Lillie M. Peterson (4, Dec 1895 Illinois) and Hattie J. Peterson (1, May 1899 Illinois). He immigrated to the US in 1873 and Martha 1885. He had been naturalized. Lars rented the place he was was farming. A Louis A. Seglem (21, Oct 1878 Norway) was living with them and working for Lars as a "hired laborer". The family had moved back to Dix Township, Ford County, Illinois (sheet 6A,dwelling # 81) by the 1910 United States Federal Census (18-19 April 1910). Peterson (20 Illinois). Lars was retired and son, Carl was farming. Anna and Lillie were doing housework. His parents were Peter Peterson (Sweden) & Malinda Anderson (Sweden). Martha's parents were John Johnson (Norway) & Carey Thompson (Norway). The Anderson grandchildren's parent's were Ole Anderson (37 Norway) & Nettie Peterson (Illinois). Lars owned his home valued at $1500. He had lived in the US 51 years, Martha had been in the US 39 years, for both, 10 years in Iowa. Lars had 6 years of rural school, Martha, Lillie & Hattie, 8 years. Lars P. Their daughter, Lillie Peterson (34, pratical nurse) was living at home and taking care of their grandchildren: Mildred Anderson (15 Iowa) and Thelma Anderson (8 Iowa) after their mother, Nellie died. Lived At Paxton, Illinois Until 1915 "Kanawha, Iowa, March 23; - Lars Peter Peterson was born October 31, 1851 at Gottenberg, Sweden, and died Wednesday, March 17, 1937 at his home in east Kanawha at the age of 85 years, 5 months. He suffered from the infirmities of old age and was bedfast for the last ten weeks. Mr. Peterson lived in Sweden until 1872, when he came to America and settled at Paxton, Illinois. In 1915 he moved to Stilson where he lived until 1922 when he came to Kanawha. He was married to Martha Johnson, of Paxton, Ill., on October 19, 1887. Mrs. Peterson passed away Sept. 16, 1936. Surviving are one son, Carl Peterson, of Britt, three daughters, Mrs. Edward Mehl, of Britt, Mrs. Dewey Weltzheimer and Lily Peterson, of Kanawha. One daughter, Mrs. Nettie Anderson, preceded Mr. Peterson in death. Funeral services were held at the Kanawha Lutheran church Saturday afternoon with the Rev. Maurice Peterson in charge. Pall bearers were John Shurson, James Mehl, Lars Olson, Elmer Engstrom, Mons Omvig and Tom Dahl. Burial was made in Kanawha cemetery. "Lars smoked a pipe and used Prince Albert tobacco. He always had a mustache. He had one cow that he milked. The kids liked taking the cow for Halloween. One year they took it and put it in the bandstand in Kanawha.
