A celebration of her life was held Monday, Sept. 18 at the First Presbyterian Church in Miller with the Rev. Brian Jones presiding. Burial was in the G.A.R. Cemetery, Miller, under the direction of Reck Funeral Home, Miller. Casketbearers were Don and Jay Pugh, Terry and Merle Jenner, Barry and Jerry Grogan. Latha Ilene Anderberg was born September 20, 1924 at St. Lawrence, S.D., to Arthur and Alveria (Fisher) Anderberg. At the age of seven, her mother died. Ilene grew up and attended school in the St. Lawrence area. While in school, she enjoyed participating in band. On July 3, 1941 she married Thomas Grogan at Pipestone, Minn. They made their home in the Ree Heights area. During World War II, Thomas served in South Africa, so Ilene and Larry moved to Portland, Ore., to live with her father. While there, she worked in the shipyards to support her family. Following Thomas' time in the service, the family returned to the Ree Heights area where they lived until 1959 when they moved to St. Lawrence. Besides being a loving wife and mother, Ilene worked many years for the Meriweather family at their veterinary office. She also worked for Leo Istas at the bakery and part-time at the fabric shop. Ilene loved to sew and do embroidery work. She had the joy of completing a family quilt and the front of a baby's blanket. Ilene could also make a gourmet meal with the leftovers from the last couple of days. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, the First Presbyterian Church, First Presbyterial Women's Organization and a 50-year-member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Left to cherish Ilene's life is her husband of 65 years, Thomas Grogan of Miller; her three children, Larry (Valia) of El Centro, Calif., Gayleen Grogan (Winston) Ward of Diamond Dale, Mich., and Mike (Larma) of Lafayette, La.; five grandchildren, Matthew (Kathy) Grogan, Jamie (Roger) Moore, Jim (Kim) Cross, Melissa (Steve) Ottjepka and Ashley Grogan; five great-grandchildren, Mason and Maddox Moore, David, Julie and Olivia Cross; one step-great-grandchild, Allison Ottjepka; one sister, Iva Jean Anderberg (Carl) Naeld of Portland, Ore.; and one brother, Alvin Anderberg of Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Lucille; and one brother, Archie. In lieu of flowers, memorials are directed to Alzheimer's Research. The Miller Press 9/16/2006
