She was born Blanche Gibbs Nov. 16, 1891 near Allerton, Wayne County, the third of eight children of Milton Cameron Gibbs and Grace Smith Gibbs. She was born Blanche Gibbs Nov. 16, 1891 near Allerton, Wayne County, the third of eight children of Milton Cameron Gibbs and Grace Smith Gibbs. She attended Grinnell College, graduating in 1914 with a bachelor of science degree. She taught biology and mathematics for eight years in high schools in Iowa Falls, Green Mountain and Marshalltown. She was married June 28, 1916 to O. H. Allbee who practiced law in Marshalltown until he died in 1947. She married Clarence A. Norland in March 1959. She lived in Altadena, Calif., until her second husband died in 1980, when she returned to Marshalltown. Mrs. Norland was active in the American Legion Auxiliary where she served as a local and state president and national vice president in 1932; she was state secretary-treasurer fulltime from 1949 to 1954 in the Des Moines headquarters, editing the newspaper and supervising Hawkeye Girls State, the poppy industry and volunteers in veterans administration hospitals and state institutions. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, and served many years as Sunday school superintendent. She helped found the American Association of University Women in Marshalltown and was the first president in 1921. She served as state president of Republican Women from 1946 to 1948 and a similar post in California. Mrs. Norland was also active in the Parent-Teacher Association, Eastern Star, PEO, Chapter BB, YWCA, and Tuesday Musical. She contributed over 2,000 hours of volunteer service to the Marshall County Civilian Defense Office in World War II. She was also a class agent in the Grinnell College Alumni Association and was on their advisory council. She received a number of recognitions and awards for her volunteer service. Preceding her in death were her first and second husbands, three brothers and three sisters. She is survived by a son, Donald G. Allbee of Marshalltown; a brother, Earl Gibbs of Apache Junction, Ariz.; two grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. from Marshalltown IA newspaper Times Republican dated January 31 1991
