June died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. She was born March 6, 1924, at Elwood to Earl and Gertie [Remmenga] Tilson on a farm five miles northwest of Elwood. She attended country school through the 8th grade and then graduated from Elwood High School with the class of 1941. She was married to Gail Phillips Jan. 24, 1942. Three children were born to this union, Laura Gail, James Earl, who died in 1943, and Jim E. Phillips. The couple farmed until Gail went to the service during World War II. Upon his return, they made their home in Elwood, Edison, Hot Springs, S.D., Oregon, Superior and then in Colorado Springs, Colo. It was while living in Colorado Springs that the couple divorced and June later met and married Ed Loftus July 29, 1960. While living in Colorado Springs, she worked for Emerson Electric for 10 years and Hewlett-Packard for 20 years. June and Ed moved to Lexington in 1985 to retire and return to the "good life." She loved to fish, camp, bowl, golf, take and show pictures. She loved being with family and friends and just enjoying life. She was a member of the Elwood Christian Church. She is survived by one son, Jim [Lynnette] Phillips, Lexington; one daughter, Laura Gail [Freeland "Matt"] Mattison, Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Betty E. Mahar, Lexington, and Barbara Elliott, Elwood; two half-sisters, Earline [Miland] Silveria, San Leandro, Calif., and Ruth Courkamp, Wiley, Colo.; five grandchildren, Terry, Gary and John Hinners, and Jodi Smolik and Jerry Phillips; nine great-grandchildren, Justin and Ashley Smolik, Samantha Jo Hinners, Jessica, Jamie and Carson Hinners, Rebecca and Laura Hinners and Kyle Phillips; along with nieces, nephews, and many friends. She was preceded in death, in addition to her infant son, James, by her parents, and both husbands. Memorials are suggested to the Elwood Christian Church. Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington is in charge of arrangements.
