Schultz August 28, 1915 - June 11, 2012 Lake View, IA LaVern Carl Schultz was born on August 28, 1915, to Richard and Clara (Overhue) Schultz on the family farm, Cottonwood County, Jeffers, MN. The family moved to Lake View, IA, where LaVern was confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church on April 13, 1930. He graduated from Lake View High School with the class of 1934. LaVern entered into the United States Army on June 9, 1942, and was honorably discharged on January 10, 1946, earning the rank of 1st Lieutenant in the 19th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squad. He was first stationed at Ft. Knox, KY where as a Corporal he was instructing in "Tactical Armored Training." In March 1943, LaVern went to Ft. Riley, KS to Officers' Candidate School where he completed his training—May 1943, and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the Cavalry. In June 1944, LaVern was promoted to the rank of 1st Lt, and in Nov 1944 went to England. Part of his time overseas was spent in instructing in Air Defense in Wales. He moved to the European mainland in time to take part in the Battle of the Bulge in Dec. 1944. LaVern was Troop Platoon Leader for a time and later on advanced to the position of Company Commander of the Mechanized Cavalry Unit. He enjoyed his reunions with his army buddies. On March 31, 1952, LaVern was united in marriage to Louise Pfannkuch at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lake View. This union was blessed with three children: Richard, Greg, and Janet. LaVern was a lifelong farmer who loved the farm life, raising cattle, and planting and harvesting his crops. He was a member of the Cattlemen's Association, enjoyed deer hunting, fishing and making homemade wine. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle who cherished his family and friends. As a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, LaVern held various positions in the church. He was involved in the construction of the new church and parsonage. LaVern, age 96, passed away on Monday, June 11, 2012, at Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View. Survivors include his wife, Louise Schultz of Lake View; sons: Richard Schultz and wife Linda of Lake View and Greg Schultz and special friend Kim Follenweider of Lake View; daughter Janet Schultz of Boone, IA and special friend Paul Hjortsvang of Stanhope, IA; grandchildren: Eric and LeAnn Schultz of Lake View; sister Delores (Schultz) Neville of Odebolt; and many extended family members. LaVern was preceded in death by his parents: brothers Elmer and Don Schultz; sister Dorothy (Schultz) Miller; sister-in-law Lucille Schultz; and brother-in-law Robert Neville.
