Description	:	LaVern Steiger put her sewing skills to good use when her children were growing up on their farm 12 miles northwest of Selby, but that was only one of her many skills at which she excelled. She worked along side of her husband, LeRoy, in his carpentry business. She would draw the plans for projects and LeRoy would do the work. They made a very good team. When the new Methodist Church was built in Selby, it was LaVern who stained and varnished all the woodwork in the new church. Refinishing woodwork was a task she enjoyed doing. LaVern was also an avid bowler, was a member of the Selby Ladies Bowling League and held many offices in the league over the years. She died Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at the Mobridge Regional Hospital at the age of 75. She hadn't been feeling well for a couple days but shortly after she came home from the hospital she got up from the table and collapsed. She never regained consciousness. LaVern was born April 30, 1930, to Lorenz and Katherine (Baumgartner) Klein in Hague, N.D, Her early childhood was spent in Hague where she began her education. Later the family moved to Aberdeen where she completed her education and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School. She had attended the Glenham School a short time when she was in the grades and LeRoy Steiger was in high school there at the time. Some years later they happened to meet again and LeRoy describes it as, "I thought, hey, this is something. I better go after her!" They were married Nov. 28, 1954, at the Methodist Church in Selby and made their home on the farm where they have since resided. She was a member of the Selby United Methodist Church and Ladies Aid. She leaves her husband, LeRoy; sons, Perry (Sheryl) Steiger of South Sioux City, Neb., Steven (Jenny) Steiger of St. Paul, Minn., and James (Diane) Steiger of Watertown; daughter Debra Steiger of Wauseon, Ohio; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ella Mitzel of Mobridge. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Katherine, and numerous half-brothers and sisters and stepbrothers and sisters. Funeral services for LaVern were Saturday, March 11, at the United Methodist Church in Selby. The Rev. Ken Parks and the Rev. Deb Mack officiated. Sharon Wolff was organist. Cal Bohle and Vi Lemburg sang as duets, "My God and I" and "Just As I Am." Hymns by the congregation were "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" and "When We All Get to Heaven." Casketbearers were Jamey Steiger, Brenda Fergel, Lance Steiger, Candace Steiger, Lisa Steiger and Derek Steiger. Burial was in the Selby Memorial Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. A prayer service was held Friday evening at the funeral Home in Mobridge.
