Burnham and Wood West Union Man Dies in Accident WEST UNION—Lavern Palas, 50, West Union, was fatally injured shortly before noon Wednesday when the truck he was driving collided with a car at the intersection of E ast Elm and North Pine streets. Palas, an employe of the Town and Country Cashway Lumber, was driving a flat bed truck loaded with sand. Deputy Sheriff Bill O'Laughlin said Palas apparently swerved the northbound truck to avoid hitting the car. The truck overturned and Palas was thrown out and pinned under the truck. He died at the West Union hospital about 12:30 p.m. Mrs. Leo Becking, 52, West Union, was driver of the westbound car. The rear dual wheels of the truck left tracks on the hood of the car. Mrs. Becking was treated for minor cuts. She was charged with failure to stop for a stop sign. Palas' death was the first traffic fatality to occur in West Union since 1943. Mr. Palas, a resident of West Union for seven years, is survived by his wife, Bessie; two daughters, Mrs. Ronald Guyer and Mrs. Gerald Suckow, both of West Union, and a son, David of Oelwein. Services: Tentatively set for Saturday at I p.m. at the Zion Lutheran church. Friends may call at the Burnham and Wood funeral home. Contributed by P2-ABQ
