He was the youngest of six children: Harmon, Martin, Melvin, Arnold and Mae. He received is elementary education at a country school near the family home. He attended Adams High School and graduated in 1944. He married Margery C. Nelson on Nov. 26, 1948. He farmed before serving his country in the United State Army from 1952-1955 and was a cook at Fort Riley, Kan.
