Chapel services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday, July 21, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St. Burial will be in the Postville (Iowa) Cemetery. To celebrate LaVerna's life, friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, at the funeral home. She was born on Feb. 8, 1922, in Postville, Iowa, daughter of Cevert and Ethel (Dahms) Meyer. LaVerna attended school in Postville. She married Gerald K. Barker on Oct. 22, 1946; he preceded her in death on Jan. 14, 1993. LaVerna was employed as an inspector at Janlin Plastics in Dubuque. After Janlin closed, she worked from 1977 until 1981 at John Deere Dubuque Works, until her retirement. LaVerna was a member of the United Auto Workers Locals 13 and 94. She was a former member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She was an avid race fan and enjoying watching her sons race stock cars. She also followed NASCAR, and her favorite driver was Jeff Gordon, No. 24. LaVerna enjoyed spending time in Florida during the winter, camping and going to races. In her spare time, she also liked to do crossword puzzles. Her greatest joy was to be with her family and grandchildren. Surviving are a daughter, Vicki S. (Dennis) Post, of Dubuque; two sons, Richard K. (Monica) Barker and Ronald W. (Karen) Barker, both of Dubuque; four grandchildren, Branden Post, Jennifer (Pat) Betts, Lindsay Barker and Laura Barker; three great-grandchildren, Brianna, Jayden and Ella; a brother, Loren "Gus" (Betty) Meyer, of Postville; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, in infancy; and a sister and brother-in-law, Bernadine "Bernie" (Ryder) Gunderson.
