He was baptized at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth, attended country school in Portsmouth and then attended St. Peter’s Catholic School in Defiance, Iowa. LaVerne entered the United States Navy in 1948 and received his honorable discharge from service in 1950. On January 23, 1954, he was united in marriage to Colleen Schwiesow in Des Moines, Iowa. There were six children born to their union: Steve, Nick, Joe, Ron, Becky, and Bill. He became a heavy equipment mechanic and started working for Eckerman Construction in Defiance, then worked at Owens Construction, and retired in 1997 after twenty-five years of working for Western Engineering. LaVerne died on Friday, October 31, 2014 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-five years, two months, and five days. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son Nick. He is survived by his wife of sixty years Colleen Daeges of Harlan, Iowa; children: Steve Daeges and his wife Sue of Harlan, Iowa, Joe Daeges and his wife Joy of Irwin, Iowa, Ron Daeges of Harlan, Iowa, Becky and her husband Randy Miller of Portsmouth, Iowa, and Bill Daeges and his wife Jill of Harlan, Iowa; twelve grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his sister Marita Theulen of Defiance, Iowa; other family members and friends. * * * * * * from "1882~1982 Defiance (Iowa) Century Review" LaVERNE DAEGES LaVerne Daeges was born at Portsmouth, Iowa on August 26, 1929. His parents are William, born in Missouri in 1903, and Rose Stein Daeges, born in Portsmouth in 1899. He has one sister, Marita Theulen. He went to school in Portsmouth and Defiance. On January 23, 1954, he married Colleen Fay Schwiesow in Des Moines, Iowa. Her parents are Walter Charles Schwiesow, born at Aspinwall, Iowa on January 17, 1896, and Caroline Dorothy "Lena" Vinke Claussen Schwiesow, born at Manning, Iowa on January 10, 1899. Her brothers and sisters are: Earl, Louis, Vic, Ruth Johnson and Bernice Dunlap. Laverne and Colleen have six children: Steven married Sue Kloewer; Nicholas (deceased); Joseph married Joy Axland; Ronald; Rebecca Ann; and William. The family resides in Harlan and he is a mechanic.
