Read More	Wenatchee World - Tuesday, November 8, 2011 June 15, 1922 ~ October 31, 2011 Longtime Leavenworth, WA resident and entrepreneur, LaVerne Peterson, passed away Monday morning, after spending the weekend surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. LaVerne was born in Stickney, SD to Fredrick and Clarissa (Wilsey) Tritle, the fifth of eight children. The family came to the Dryden area in April 1934, using two cars, four boys with Dad and four girls with Mom, one girl and one boy coming down with the measles on the way. They came to Washington State searching for a better life during the Depression years. They settled in Leavenworth, where LaVerne received her education, graduating from Leavenworth High School in 1939. She worked at various jobs, including her mother's boarding house and Shelton's Cafe;, which she later purchased from Ray Shelton. In 1970, she founded the well known Edelweiss Hotel and Restaurant. Crowds from all over came to sample her famous fondue. LaVerne was one of the four original founders of the Leavenworth Bavarian Village that we know today. In 1976, she was chosen to be the Leavenworth's Royal Lady and for 18 years, she was President of the past Royal Ladies. When Leavenworth celebrated their centennial in 2006, LaVerne had the honor of being Grand Marshall of the Autumn Leaf Festival. In 1941, she married Mel Wyled in Couer d'lene, ID and their marriage was blessed with a daughter, Karen and a son, Mel. Following Mel's death, LaVerne later married Vance Vincent and after his passing, she married Bud Peterson and together they built the River Bend Mobile Home Park on the Wenatchee River, close to Dryden, where LaVerne resided for the past 33 years. LaVerne really enjoyed playing cards and was a whiz at poker, winning many tournaments throughout the area. She also had a lot of fun hosting Pinochle and weekly Bridge parties. Everyone looked forward to an afternoon at LaVerne's. She was also well known for her talent and amazing stamina on the dance floor. She was a regular at the Wenatchee Senior Center every Tuesday, sitting out very few dances. Seniors looked forward to her annual dance and the potluck on the river every summer. Live music and dancing were enjoyed by a huge crowd, all afternoon. LaVerne loved life and people. Her number one priority was always her family and friends. She was kind, generous and always available to lend a helping hand when needed. She touched so many lives and had a rare gift of making everyone feel welcome and special. With what seemed like endless energy, she spearheaded countless fundraisers, benefiting many charities in our community. LaVerne is survived by her daughter, Karen (Fred) Stebbins of Yakima; son, Mel (Dawnell) Wyles of Leavenworth; brother, Vernon (Dorla) Tritle of Dryden; sister, Berniece Ferrel of Wenatchee; grandsons, Jeff (Paula) Stebbins and Channing (Shelly) Wyles; and granddaughter, Kristen (Theron) Gilmore; stepchildren, Carol Dunsmore, Larry Peterson, Donna Leahy and Lee Peterson; and many great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Francis Tritle, Clarence Tritle and Paul Tritle; and sisters, Evelyn Umbarger and Margaret Ann McKay. A special warm thank you to Cindy Hunt and Valerie Huguenin for their loving care until the end. A Celebration of LaVerne's Life will be held at the Leavenworth Church of the Nazarene, 111 Ski Hill Drive on Saturday, November 12, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. Memorials may be made in LaVerne's name to The United Mitochondrial Research Foundation, 8085 Saltburg Road, Suite 201, Pittsburg, PA, 15239. Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of the arrangements.
