Obit: LaVerne Horther Lifelong Durango resident LaVerne Horther died Saturday, May 9, 2009. She was 91. Her parents, Vaughan and Elizabeth Owenby, moved to La Plata County in 1915. On July 26, 1917, Mrs. Horther was born in Marvel in a home birth that was attended by Dr. Walter W. Smith. Her father, who was an employee of Fort Lewis, which was at the time an American Indian school, died when a large draft horse pinned him against a large concrete wall. After his death, Mrs. Horther, her mother and her younger sister moved into Durango. Mrs. Owenby provided for her young family by working for several local medical doctors. Mrs. Horther graduated with honors from Durango High School in 1935. In 1938, she married George Horther. The couple had no children. Mr. Horther worked for a small store called Animas Market, which was located where Spanish Trails Motel now stands. The couple later purchased the market and a small motel across Main Avenue, where north City Market now stands. During World War II, Mrs. Horther worked for the Ration Board. After their retirement, the Horthers spent most winters in Arizona and traveled many times to Mexico. Mrs. Horther enjoyed collecting seashells and driftwood, which she used to create displays. Mrs. Horther was also a seamstress and shared her talent with her friends. At one time, the Horthers "adopted" a class of grade-school students in the Ignacio School District. They spent numerous hours sharing their talents and doing crafts with the children. Mrs. Horther was preceded in death by her husband of 60 year, George Horther. No immediate family survives her. Mrs. Horther is survived by two cousins.
