The funeral service will be held on Friday, June 7 at 2:00 PM, at First United Methodist Church in Columbus with Rev. Cindi Stewart officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery with military honors by The American Legion, Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Friday from 1:00 PM until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service at 1:45... LaVerne “Pete” Walter Pieters was born October 24, 1938, in Bellwood, Nebraska, to Walter and Margaret (Bock) Pieters. LaVerne graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus, and entered the United States Army on June 2, 1957. After his honorable discharge on January 31, 1964, LaVerne married Sandra Francis on July 30, 1964, in Bellville, Kansas. LaVerne worked for Behlen Manufacturing and Champlain Petroleum as a dispatcher and truck driver until his retirement. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, NASCAR, and was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker Football fan. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Columbus. Laverne’s greatest joy in life was his wife, children, and grandchildren. LaVerne is survived by: Wife – Sandra Pieters of Columbus, NE Daughter – Michelle (Matt) Thorne of Grand Island, NE Son – Kevin (Renee) Pieters of Omaha, NE Son – Chad Pieters of Columbus, NE Son – Brad Pieters of Omaha, NE Grandchildren – Cole Thorne, Corbin Pieters and Callum Pieters Brother – Mike (Bonnie) Pieters Sisters – Phyllis Sladek, Janet (Larry) DeWispelare, Marilou Pieters, Diann (John) DeRiso, Sharon Oborny, Nancy (Loren) Hammer, and Lori (Mike) Brezina Many nieces and nephews LaVerne was preceded in death by: Parents – Walter and Margaret Pieters Sister – Pat Oleson
