She died 12 August 1886 in Melrose, Massachusetts, and was buried in Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose. Lavinia Skolfield Melcher lived until the last two years of her life in the house on Noble Street, Brunswick, which was built at the time of her marriage, from lumber taken from land owned by her mother on White Island, opposite Mere Point. Robert Dunning Melcher was born 7 May 1810 in Brunswick, Maine. He died in San Francisco, California, about 1870 and was buried there. A monument in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose, Massachusetts, records the dates of his birth and death. Robert Dunning Melcher was one of the "Forty-Miners" who went in search of gold, arriving in San Francisco 22 May 1850. He was quite successful on his first trip, but on his way home he was robbed in crossing the Isthmus and in two years returned. In 1866 he lived at 15 Market Street, San Francisco. He was listed in the San Francisco City Directory in 1870 but not in 1871. The children of Lavinia4 Skolfield and Robert Dunning Melcher were: i. Robert Edward5 Melcher was born 25 October 1835 in Brunswick, Maine; died of pneumonia in 1861 in Le Harve, France, and was buried there. He was on his first voyage with his uncle, Capt. William Stanwood Skolfield. ii. Susan Dunning Melcher was born 14 March 1838 in Brunswick, Maine. A schoolteacher, she and her sister Isabel lived together in Melrose, Massachusetts, until after their mother's death. She died 15 December 1917 in Reading, Massachusetts, and was buried in Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose. iii. Isabel Lavina Melcher was born 7 April 1841 in Brunswick, Maine; died in 1932 in Worcester, Massachusetts, and was buried in Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose, Massachusetts. After the death of her sister she lived with cousins in Worcester,Massachusetts. iv. Anna Davis Melcher was born 11 June 1848; married Leroy Zuingline Collins.
