Description	:	LaVona Owens, 85, died Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, KS. She was born April 17, 1921 in Lane County to Guy V. and Alice M. (Thon) Bretz. LaVona was married to Emmett Owens on September 22, 1947 in Garden City. He passed away on June 14, 1969. LaVona grew up in Dighton and graduated with the class of 1940 from Dighton High School where she played the saxophone in the school band. Read More	LaVona Owens, 85, died Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, KS. She was born April 17, 1921 in Lane County to Guy V. and Alice M. (Thon) Bretz. LaVona was married to Emmett Owens on September 22, 1947 in Garden City. He passed away on June 14, 1969. LaVona grew up in Dighton and graduated with the class of 1940 from Dighton High School where she played the saxophone in the school band. During this time she also played the piano and organ and enjoyed singing. She was a member of a tap dancing group that entertained during local dances and intermission at the theater. She worked as a telephone operator and as a cashier at the grocery store. After her marriage she lived on the Owens farm in Lane County, she loved the farm life. After her husband died she moved back into Dighton. She was well known for the many flowers she raised in her yard and won many ribbons at the fair with them. She was the longtime chairman of the Garden Show for the Lane County Fair. She enjoyed cooking, especially baking and deliving cookies during the Christmas season and had a large collection of hats and dolls and other collectibles. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Dighton and the As You Like It Club. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and her step-daughter, Maellen Owens who lived with her. Survivors include 3 sisiter--Gwen Ducan Dighton, KS.; Aleen Ard, Phoenix, AZ.; and Phyllis and Bill Lewis, Amarillo, TX. Memorial Services were held Friday, September 1, 2006 at the First Christian Church in Dighton with Rev. Howard Bever officiating. Graveside Services were held at the Dighton Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the First Christian Church or Lane County Historical Society in care of Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton, KS. From Dighton Herald September 6, 2006 page 3.
