Description	:	Lawrence Ansel Flaten, 89, of Belgrade passed away May 12, 2005, at the VA Hospital in Fort Harrison as a result of numerous health problems. He was born, one of 11 children, on Aug. 18, 1915, to Lars and Anna Flaten of Carpio, N.D. He attended school in Carpio, and at the age of 21 “headed west” to find work. He has... Read More	Lawrence Ansel Flaten, 89, of Belgrade passed away May 12, 2005, at the VA Hospital in Fort Harrison as a result of numerous health problems. He was born, one of 11 children, on Aug. 18, 1915, to Lars and Anna Flaten of Carpio, N.D. He attended school in Carpio, and at the age of 21 “headed west” to find work. He worked for the Cramer ranch in the Big Timber area. In March 1942, he married Eleanor Westereng, also of Carpio. He served in the Army during World War II and was stationed in the Philippines. He has been a member of the American Legion for more than 50 years. A son, Larry, was born in 1944 while he was still overseas. Upon his return stateside, he continued his farm and ranch work and later moved to Springdale, where he worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad for several years. A daughter, Linda, was born in 1948. In 1957 the family moved to the Gallatin Valley, where he worked for the Wytana Ranch. Later, he worked for Kyd Cattle Co. in Three Forks and retired from Cherry Lane Farms in the mid-1970s. His wife of 25 years, Eleanor, passed away prematurely in 1967. On May 21, 1977, he married Evah Keil Vaught of Belgrade. With this union came three stepchildren (Lynn, Shelia and Sheryl) and their children whom he gladly accepted as his own. He had a variety of interests over the years. Early on, he loved to fish and hunt. Later, he enjoyed gardening, woodworking and various crafts. He loved dogs and over the years had several “special” buddies. Lawrence was a gentle, loving man who was a friend to all who knew him and was a very caring Dad and Grandpa to all his “kids.” One of his biggest achievements was at the age of 79 when he helped his daughter, Linda, and her husband, Larry, build their log home, showing up early every day, ready for work. He seldom complained, even though his health was failing and he was not able to get out and do his daily routine. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him. Lawrence is survived by his wife, Evah of Belgrade; son, Larry (Nancy) Flaten of Manhattan; daughters, Linda (Larry) Wilcox of Three Forks, Lynn (Tanya) Vaught of Billings, Shelia (Charles) Gladden of North Carolina, and Sheryl (Ray) Snell of Gallatin Gateway. Other survivors include his grandchildren: Richard, Eric, Shawn, Dawn, Misty, Lori, Mark, Billie, Darrell, Diane, Darcy and Dale; and numerous great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Delores Anderson, Glenny Danielson, Ruth Flaten, and a brother, Hilmer Flaten, all of North Dakota. Cremation has taken place. Military graveside services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Fairview Cemetery in Three Forks. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at the Dokken-Nelson Tribute Center in Belgrade.
