Read More	Lawrence "Larry" August Hoffman, 59, of Ellendale died Friday, June 22, 2007, near Ellendale as a result of a tractor accident. Lawrence August Hoffman, son of August and Alvina (Schmitt) Hoffman was born November 24, 1947 in Ellendale. He grew up on the family farm about ten miles west of Forbes. He attended a rural school, Albertha #1 for the first six grades. He then attended Forbes Public School, graduating with the Class of 1965. He went on to attend the University of North Dakota-Ellendale Branch, where he graduated in May of 1969 with a Bachelor of Science Degree, majoring in Industrial Arts and a minor in Music. He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Joan Tveit on August 15, 1969 in St. James Lutheran Church in Leola, SD. They made their home in Wishek, ND where he taught band and chorus for the Wishek Public School from 1969 to 1972. Following the death of his mother, Larry and Joan moved back to Forbes and purchased the family farm, where they began farming and ranching. While also ranching, in 1974, he began teaching industrial shop and music classes in the Forbes Public School and was the School Administrator until it closed in 1987. He also taught music in the Kulm and Monango Public Schools. In 1989, the family moved into Ellendale, returning to country living on the weekends. Larry and his wife were also active business partners with the Foundation Quarter Horses and with FreeLife International. In 1990, he was elected Dickey County Auditor and was entering his 5th elected term, a position he held dutifully until his death. He was committed to serving his county constituents to the best of his ability. He strove to continually educate himself. He helped initiate the project to make the County Courthouse handicap accessible and was involved in the restoration and maintenance of the building, which was very important to him. Larry was passionate about his family. He loved traveling and enjoying new experiences. His children and grandchildren were in love with his "Larry" jokes, his amazing heart and compassion. Anyone who knew him knew he would put forth his best effort no matter the task, and that he was trustworthy. He will be deeply missed by his family. He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church, where he had been a Sunday school superintendent and had served as President of the church council. Larry took much pride in being actively involved in many organizations and community activities. He was a member of Ellendale Civic Association, Ellendale Historical Society, BUILD Steering Committee, Maud Evans Saddle Club, and a committee member for the 125th celebration of Dickey County. For 25 years he had been a Dickey County 4-H leader. He was a member of the ND Association of Counties as well as a past President and member of the ND Auditors Association, charter member and secretary/treasurer of Southeast Water Users, board member of Dickey County Water Board since 1976, Dickey County Water Resource District and Coteau Hills Historical Center and trustee of the ND Cowboy Hall of Fame since 2003. Survivors include his wife of Ellendale, four daughters, Denise (Joe) Walton of Williston, ND, Deanna (Cody) Sand of Forbes, ND, Deborah (Darryl) Tank of Ellendale and Donnah Hoffman of Mina, SD, one sister, LaVonne Sayler of Bennett, Colorado, one step-mother, Martha Retzer Hoffman of Eureka, SD, one step-brother, Lester Retzer of Minneapolis and eight grandchildren, Bailey Sand, Desa Sand, Baxter Sand, LaMae Walton, Robert Walton, Josilynn Walton, Austin Tank and Chelsey Tank. His parents preceded him in death. Funeral service will be Wednesday, June 27, 2007 at Church of the Nazarene at Ellendale. The Rev. Galen Sylvester of Christ the King Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery, rural Forbes, ND. Casketbearers will be Donald Hoffman, Gary Hoffman, Eugene Elhard, Ben LaMont, Harvey Trapp and Oscar Fuller. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ellendale have been entrusted with arrangements.
