Sanow, 82, of Le Mars, Iowa, died Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars. Lawrence A. Sanow was born Nov. 15, 1922, in Tilden Township, rural Cherokee County, the son of Otto and Olive (Peters) Sanow. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. He attended country school in Union Township, rural Cherokee County. As a teenager, he moved with his family to Le Mars, where he attended and graduated from Central High in Le Mars. Following graduation, he enlisted in the US Army on Jan. 16, 1943. He was stationed in England, where he was a cook. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 26, 1945. After returning to the States, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Schwartz on June 3, 1947, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. He worked as a baker for Vander Meer Bakery in Le Mars, then retired after 40 years of service. He was a longtime member of St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, where he was an integral part of the building improvements throughout the years. He was a volunteer for church fundraisers. He was a member of Wasmer American Legion Post #241 in Le Mars. He enjoyed camping with his wife and family for many years. As a young man, he also enjoyed bowling in leagues. He also coached Little League baseball for many years and enjoyed fishing. Survivors include his wife of over 58 years, Phyllis of Le Mars; his five children, Paul Sanow of Silver City, N.M., Vidette Sanow of Madison, Wis., Stephen Sanow of Mobile, Ala., Clayton Sanow of Le Mars, and Gregory Sanow and his wife Jodi of Owasso, Okla.; two sisters, Virginia Schulz and her husband Melvin of Le Mars, and Joyce Gotto of Glendora, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Leslie, Harold, Delbert, and Aldon; and two sisters, LaVonne and Marie. A Mass of Christian Burial will held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. James Tigges officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars, with military rites provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 in Le Mars. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today (Monday), with a parish rosary at 4 p.m., the family present after 6 p.m., and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., all at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the church. Casket bearers will be his four sons, and four grandsons, Lee, Nathan, Mike, and Dan Sanow. Honorary casket bearers will be his daughter and five granddaughters, Amber, Ashley, Laura, Danielle, and Brianna Sanow.
