He was born January 3, 1941 in Ottumwa to Iril E. and Virginia Armstrong Flanders. A graduate of Ottumwa High School, Gene had worked as an art teacher at Franklin Elementary, Walsh Jr. High and Evans Middle School. After retirement he went to work in the maintenance department for Ottumwa Medical Clinic and opened his own pottery studio where he taught on the weekends. He was born January 3, 1941 in Ottumwa to Iril E. and Virginia Armstrong Flanders. A graduate of Ottumwa High School, Gene had worked as an art teacher at Franklin Elementary, Walsh Jr. High and Evans Middle School. After retirement he went to work in the maintenance department for Ottumwa Medical Clinic and opened his own pottery studio where he taught on the weekends. Gene enjoyed reading, gardening, watching old movies, and loved his cat Furball and attending Charlette's school activities. Surviving is his daughter-in-law, Lolita Flanders and a granddaughter, Charlette Flanders. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Donny and Bruce Flanders. Limited open visitation for friends will be 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, December 3, 2020 at Reece Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left at www.rfh-ia.com. Private funeral services will be held at Reece Funeral Home with Father Jim Betzen, C.PP.S. officiating. For those not able to attend, you may watch the service at 10 a.m. Friday on the Reece Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will be in Coal Creek Cemetery.
