He was born May 24, 1927, in Schoenchen to Nick and Magdalena (Hertel) Werth. He married Laurine Werth (Frank Werth family) on Sept. 26, 1949, in Schoenchen. [She is the daughter of Frank and Lidwina Tauscher Werth] He worked the family farm while all his brothers served in World War II. He was a farmer and for many years operated a sand business. He served on various school boards for 18 years, including USD 489. He was instrumental in establishing the first public education funds for mentally disabled children in Ellis County. Local politicians of the time knew him as an advocate of the common working man. One of his great enjoyments was serving many years in the Knights of Columbus, especially on the Third Degree initiation team that traveled throughout the state. He was a member of St. Anthony parish, Schoenchen, the St. Anthony Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council No. 4166, and the Bishop Cunningham Assembly of Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Hays. He led a local choir, The Schoencheers, that recorded Volga-German, religious, Christmas and folk songs for posterity. He is one of the founders of the Volga-German Society of Ellis and Rush counties and one of the original organizers, as well as an unwavering participant, of the Ellis County Oktoberfest. He sang in the German Men's Choir. Survivors include his wife, Hays; three sons, Michel Werth and Nicolas Werth, both of Schoenchen, and Todd Werth, Hays; a daughter, Janel Moore and husband, Orville, Hays; 10 grandchildren, Father Joshua Werth, Lucy Mullen and Alexandra Werth, Russ Moore, Leigh Ann Edmonds, John and Curtis Moore, Zachary and Alysha Werth and Nicolas Werth; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by eight brothers, Clarence, Fr. Alvin OFM Cap., Robert, Clement, Leonard, Alvin, and Frederick and John in infancy; and five sisters, Amelia Haas, Lidwina Gottschalk, Barbara Zimmerman, Florine Werth and Juanita Bertourne. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Schoenchen; burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, both at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. A vigil will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a combined St. Anthony Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council No. 4166 and Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m., all at the funeral home. The Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to be designated by the family in care of the funeral home.
