Kearney died at his home in Center township, September 25, 1897, after an illness of several months from cancer. The deceased was a great sufferer, the terrible disease that caused his death slowly but surely eating and sapping his life away. But during all his long illness and suffering he bore up bravely and showed much Christian fortitude. He was surrounded during his last hours by his wife and children, his mother, his sister, Mrs. Welsh, and three of his brothers, Ed. and Albert Kearney of Illinois and John Kearney of Taylor county, and his father-in-law, Mr. Meade of Illinois. Mr. Kearney moved to this county in 1875. He was born in Knox county, Illinois, May 15, 1853, and was consequently 44 years of age his last birthday. He leaves a wife and four children, the youngest 2 years of age and the eldest 19. Besides these his mother, five brothers and three sisters survive him. Mr. Kearney was an upright, honorable man and was looked up to and respected in the community in which he resided. He was a good Christian and the comfort his belief in God gave him during his illness, should be a strong inducement to unbelievers to lead better lives. The funeral was held from St. Francis church in Center township at 10 o'clock Monday morning. Father Lutz conducted the requiem high mass and Father Roche of St. Mary's church of this city preached an eloquent and touching sermon. The remains were followed to the last resting place by a large concourse of sympathizing friends and neighbors. The funeral cortege was over half a mile in length and was the largest ever seen at St. Francis' church.
