Smith, Post 24. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Lawrence was born June 11, 1928 to Christian E. and Mary (Oster) Wolff at rural Eureka. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka. He grew up on the family farm West of Eureka and attended country school through the eighth grade, and then began working with his father on the farm. Lawrence married Verneda D. Ulven on December 31, 1950. In March, 1951 he joined the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of Corporal and was a Radar Foreman 5, and obtained his GED. After his honorable discharge from the military, he attended Iowa State University in Iowa City, IA where he took coursework to train as a printing Linotype operator. Lawrence and Verneda lived in Ashley, ND, Eureka, SD, and Ipswich, SD where he worked for the local weekly newspapers. During this time, they had three children: Kenneth, Debra, and Wesley. In 1979 Lawrence joined the newspaper staff of the Aberdeen American News. He retired in 1992 after 39 years in the newspaper business. Lawrence grew up during the depression and learned early that to make it in this life you had to work hard to reap the benefits. He also lived a Christian life and was very active in his community. These values were modeled to his family members. He was a member and held offices in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Ipswich, Zion Lutheran Church of Aberdeen, the American Legion, Edmunds County Red Cross, RSVP, Belles & Beaux Square Dance Club, and the Aberdeen Senior Center. He was an active volunteer and delivered Senior Meals on Wheels, worked with the Chamber’s Visitor Center, and managed the card games at the Senior Center. He was also an avid basketball fan of the Northern State University Wolves and was proud of his support via the Wolff Family Athletic Scholarship fund. Lawrence enjoyed gardening and yard work, playing cards, and square dancing. He took great pride in his yard work and gardening, vying for yard of the week recognition. He was willing to lend a hand to each of his children over the years, whether it was moving them to a new location, painting, landscaping or yard work and advisory. For the square dance club, he was very active as an officer, historian, and participant; especially enjoyed traveling to other locales to participate in square dancing with others. Square dancing was a big part of their social activity during retirement years. He would never back down from joining a rousing game of Pinochle or Hearts, and enjoyed teaching his grandchildren how to play. He was also a very competitive scrabble player and loved getting those triple word scores. His years of working in the newspaper industry honed his skills as an outstanding speller. Grateful for having shared Lawrence’s life are his wife, Verneda; married 65 years; son Kenneth (Camille), Aberdeen; daughter Debra Wolff, Aberdeen; and son Wesley (Chris), Missouri City, TX; five grandchildren: Courtney (Brad) Messerich, Carter (Brittney) Wolff, and Laura, Andrew and Benjamin Wolff; two great-grandchildren: Owen and Lila Messerich; one brother: Calvin (Marilyn) Wolff, Sioux Falls; two sisters: Alice Wessling, Saratoga, CA and Clara Ehley, Elk River, MN; two sisters-in-law: Rose Wolff and Frances Wolff; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Philip and Reuben; three sisters: Alma, Esther and his twin Lorene (at infancy). Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
