Description	:	LAWRENCE LEGARE HARDIN (1878-1940) was born April 24, 1878, in the small South Carolina town of Batesburg, southwest of Columbia, one of the four sons of Dr. Edward King Hardin, a country doctor, and his wife Ida Clinkscales. Read More	LAWRENCE LEGARE HARDIN (1878-1940) was born April 24, 1878, in the small South Carolina town of Batesburg, southwest of Columbia, one of the four sons of Dr. Edward King Hardin, a country doctor, and his wife Ida Clinkscales. He was graduated in the public schools of his native Lexington County and graduated from Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C., in 1900. Through his family’s association with the George Washington Ragan family of Gastonia, N.C., young Legare Hardin found his way to that emerging textile city where he was offered the position of secretary and office manager at The Arlington Cotton Mills, the South’s first manufacturer of “combed” cotton yarns. He remained at the Arlington until 1913, when the mills were sold to another operating group, moving first to Rocky Mount, N.C., and then to Columbia, S.C., where he was engaged in the banking business for ten years. In 1923, an opportunity opened with one of the mills in Clover, S.C. He served as secretary, treasurer and general manager of Hawthorne Spinning Company for sixteen years until ill health forced his retirement. Active in trade association work, he was vice president of Southern Combed Yarn Spinners Association at Gastonia in 1939 and would have been its president two years later had his health not failed. He held numerous community positions in Gastonia, Columbia and Clover. He was a founder and the first president of Columbia Rotary Club, Gastonia Kiwanis Club, president of Clover Commercial Club, chairman and trustee of the Clover Public School System and a member of the York County Hospital Board. He was a lifelong Methodist, being a member of Gastonia’s Main Street Methodist Church and later of Clover Methodist Church, both of which he served as chairman of the board of stewards, and was a Sunday school teacher. Legare Hardin was married in Gastonia in 1904 to Miss Addria Chreitzberg (1878-1970), a daughter of Dr. Hillard F. Chreitzberg, pastor of Main Street Methodist Church in Gastonia from 1901 to 1904. They became the parents of a son, Lawrence Legare Hardin, Jr. (1906-1978), and two daughters, Addria Aston Hardin Proctor (1911-1989) and Mrs. Dr. Hillard F. Hardin (1917-1997). The courtly Gastonia and Clover leader died February 6, 1940, at the age of 61, only months after his retirement from business. He and Mrs. Hardin are buried in Woodside Cemetery in Clover.
