Larry passed away on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at his residence. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Watertown. Military graveside honors will be conducted by Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion, Watertown and the Military Funeral Honors Team – SD Army National Guard. Honorary pallbearers will be: residents of Eastwood Apartments and Larry's Senior Center friends. Active pallbearers will be Larry's nephews: Neil Petersen, Joel Petersen, Scott Knudsen, Tad Flood, Ryan Thorson, Dan Thorson, Matt Thorson, and Nick Horvath. Visitation will be at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Monday from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. with a Scripture Wake service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will resume on Tuesday prior to services at the church. Larry was born on April 1, 1922, in Parker, SD, to Peter and Christina (Nielsen) Knudsen. He was the third youngest of eight children and the last of his siblings to depart for heaven. Only his brother Merlin's wife, Agena Knudsen, remains. Larry "Lanky" graduated from Parker High School in 1940. His future bride, Mary Della O'Toole, came to Parker to teach a few years later. Larry was a Naval Air Force Cadet during World War II. He completed U.S. Army bombardier school in Childress, TX, where he and Mary were joined in the sacrament of marriage on December 16, 1944. Marilyn Christine and Stephen James were born to this union. Following an honorable discharge, the couple resided in Watertown, SD. Larry worked in the Montgomery Ward paint department, served on the police force, and was Codington County deputy sheriff. He was recalled to serve in the U.S. Air Force and flew 55 missions during the Korean War. He returned stateside to Spokane, Washington. The couple then farmed northwest of Lake Kampeska. Their family was blessed with another daughter, Elizabeth Ann. After retirement, Larry and Mary enjoyed winters in Kingsville, TX, where their son, Stephen (Christie), is a unit manager of the King Ranch Quarter Horse Division. Prior to his pancreatic cancer diagnosis, Larry wintered with his daughter, Elizabeth (Craig) Stephens. This May, Larry returned to Watertown to enjoy his new apartment with the help of his daughter, Marilyn (Harley) Petersen. Larry often acknowledged that the labor of death provided many opportunities. He and his first born great-grandchild welcomed others to Skype, laughing across the miles. Larry looked forward to heaven, reuniting with his beloved wife, Mary, who joined the Lord on October 2, 2007. Larry is survived by his three children and their spouses: Marilyn (Harley) Petersen of Watertown, SD, Stephen (Christie) Knudsen of Kingsville, TX, and Elizabeth (Craig) Stephens of Allen, TX; nine grandchildren: Malinda Petersen of Grand Rapids, MI, Bruce (Sarah) Petersen and Paul (Julie) Petersen all of Watertown, SD, Leslie Knudsen of Dallas, TX, Amy Knudsen of Harlingen, TX, Kristina Stephens of Cooper, TX, Anna Petersen of Nashville, TN, Sallie J. Knudsen of Austin, TX, and Amanda Stephens of Allen, TX; and eight great-grandchildren: Molly, Tyson, Isaac, Oscar, Samantha, Alyssa, Austin and Rebekah. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, five brothers, two sisters, and three baby siblings. Larry can no longer smell the flowers, he wishes for memorials to be directed to Prairie Lakes Hospice to express appreciation for the nurses who helped beautify his last few months on earth.
