Lawrence Louis Schmidt, best known as Lefty, was born on a farm near Tolstoy on Sept. 4, 1938, to Agnes (Baus) and Lawrence J. Schmidt. Lefty attended rural school and St. Anthony's Parochial School in Hoven. In 1952, the Schmidt family moved into Hoven, where they started the Hoven Bakery. Lefty attended Hoven High School graduating with the class of 1956. He served his country in the United States Army being inducted Nov. 8, 1956. Following his honorable discharge on Nov. 7, 1958, he returned to Hoven. He married Eleanor Rausch at St. Anthony's Church in Hoven on Sept. 7, 1959. From 1959-60 he was employed with Weber Construction in Hoven. In 1961, he purchased the meat locker in Hoven from Tyson Reuer and established Lefty's Meat Market. In December 1997, Lefty was diagnosed with leukemia, prompting him to sell the business and retire in January 1999. One positive aspect of his illness was the special relationship he forged with the staff at the Cancer Care Center in Aberdeen. Lefty was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hoven, served on the Hoven School Board, the Holy Infant Hospital Board, was the co-chairman of the Hoven Centennial in 1983, was a Hoven volunteer fireman, belonged to the Hoven Service Club, and was the Hoven Summer Recreation coordinator. Track and field was important to Lefty as he established the current HHS 220-yard record in 1956 and was a starter at Hoven Track meets for many years. Other favorites of Lefty's were pheasant and goose hunting, woodworking and entertaining friends at his house. Family was first with Lefty as he cherished spending time with his children and grandchildren and attending their sporting events. His devotion to Eleanor has been especially evident as he assumed the role of her caretaker since her stroke that occurred two-and-a-half years ago.
Lefty is survived by Eleanor, his wife of 49 years; three sons, Bruce (Julie) Schmidt of Laramie, Wyo., Wayne (Jody) Schmidt of Selby, and Durran (Sara) Schmidt of Aberdeen; one daughter, Lynette (Branch) Wolf of Pierre; one brother, Bill (Sue) Schmidt of Torrington, Wyo.; 10 grandchildren, Melaney Schmidt of Loveland, Colo., Lindsy Schmidt of Vermillion, Alyssa Schmidt of Laramie, Travis Schmidt of Florence, Meghan Schmidt of Aberdeen, Kelsey Schmidt of Selby, Tanner Wolf and Taryn Wolf of Pierre, and Sean Schmidt and Hayley Schmidt of Aberdeen; and a nephew, Ryan (Kate) Schmidt of Chandler, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his father on Sept. 1, 1984, and his mother on Jan. 26, 1995. He was also preceded by his father-in-law, William Rausch, and mothers-in law, Alice and Evelyn.
Honorary bearers will be Lefty's Rausch in-laws, Janice Rausch, Renee Ihle, Harlan (Mary) Rausch, Darrel (Ruby) Rausch, Vern (Sharon) Rausch, Jerry (Vicki) Rausch and Char (John) Nickolas.
Casket bearers will be Jim Hageman, Dave Von Wald, and Bob Theunissen of Hoven, grandsons Travis, Tanner, and Sean, and nephew Ryan.
