Violet M Barrett Nov. 11, 1939 Lawrence Handy GREENFIELD, Mass. -- Lawrence McDevitt Handy, 85, of 10 Congress St., Greenfield, died Tuesday morning at his home following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born May 17, 1916, in Keene, N.H., the son of George L. and Cassie (McDevitt) Handy. He attended schools in Keene and Greenfield and had made his home in Greenfield since 1931. He was employed at the Boston & Maine Railroad for 40 years as a crane operator, retiring in 1974. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army in the European Theater with Company C, 1258th Engineer Combat Battalion where he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of VFW Post 3968 in Winchester, N.H., AARP, the American Legion, and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed Red Sox baseball, hunting and was an avid fisherman. On Nov. 11, 1939, he married the former Violet Barrett, who survives. Besides his wife of 61 years, he leaves a son, Robert W. Handy of New Hampshire; two daughters, Donna J. Newton of Bernardston, and Bonnie M. Demers of Greenfield; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A prayer service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the O'Connor-Carr Funeral Home, 42 Parker St., Winchester, N.H. Burial with military honors will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Winchester. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home Friday from 10:30 a.m. until the hour of the funeral.
