Lawrence Otto Kumm was born September 1, 1920, in Osmond, the son of William and Johanna (Lindwurm) Kumm. He was baptized and confirmed at Eden Valley Church in rural Pierce County. He attended country schools in Pierce County. He proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II from February 1942 until November 1945, serving in the Pacific Theatre. After returning from the service, he attended GI school. He married Shirley Ann Gieselman on March 3, 1946, at First Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomfield. They were blessed with four children, Gaylen, Cliff, Jolene, and Delray. He farmed for over 45 years in the Osmond, Hartington and Creighton areas. He also sold Foxbilt Feeds, Hulting Hybrids Seed Corn and Archer Oil during those years, until he retired and they moved to Creighton in1989. Shirley preceded him in death on December 12, 2014. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, making beer and wine, playing cards with neighbors, attending farm sales, woodworking and making unusual gadgets. He also restored his first new car, a 1951 Studebaker. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving on the firing squad for funerals for many years. He was a member of Keep Creighton Beautiful and was instrumental in the restoration of Rose Hill Cemetery, where he spent many hours volunteering. He is survived by one daughter, Jolene Kasper of Crofton; three sons, Gaylen Kumm of Boise, ID, Cliff (Rowien) Kumm of Beatrice and Delray (Lib) Kumm of O’Neill; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Richard (Norma) Gieselman; and one sister-in-law, Fern (Bob) Svehla. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two daughters-in-law, Cathy Kumm and Luane Kumm, one son-in-law, Mark Kasper, two sisters, Linda Fuelberth and Charlotte Young, and two brothers, George Kumm and Willard Kumm.
