Friends may call at the Church on Monday after 9 a.m. Lawrence Raymond Almquist was born in rural Yorktown, Iowa, on July 2, 1920, the son of Frank and Ellen (Olsen) Almquist. After graduating from high school in Shenandoah, Almy completed manager training through Safeway Grocery Stores. He was a World War II veteran serving with the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant in Battery A, 360th Field Artillery Battalion. Almy served in Rhineland, Northern France, and Central Europe and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Almy was a store manager for Safeway Grocery Stores in Council Bluffs and Boone. He had lived in Boone since 1957. On December 7, 1968, Almy married Betty (Dorland) Carroll in Boone. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church since 1949 and served as an elder. Almy was also a member of the Noon Kiwanis, American Legion #56, Wood Carvers of America, and served on the Johnny Appleseed project in Boone for 27 years. Almy enjoyed wood carving, especially life sized birds, antiques, and furniture refinishing. He retired from Safeway Stores in 1982. He and Betty wintered in Arizona in their motor home and enjoyed trips to Branson, MO. Almy also drove cars for Pat Clemons, Inc. Almy is preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty, a brother Paul, a sister Tudy, and a step daughter Jill Carroll Wolf. He is survived by a son Mark and wife Debby of Estherville; a step daughter Jan Fuegen and husband Jim of Huxley; two grandchildren Andy Almquist and wife Annie of Muncie, Indiana, and Amy Chatham and husband Dan of North Liberty; two step-grandchildren Jon Petersen of Van Meter and Angela Dose and husband Shawn of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and eight great-grandchildren.
