BATTLE CREEK, Iowa -- Lawrence Strait, 89, of Battle Creek died Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at Willow Dale Wellness Village in Battle Creek.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek, with the Rev. Randy Cormeny officiating. Burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday in St. Claire Cemetery in Ute, Iowa, with military rites conducted by Abby Post No. 442 of the American Legion. Visitation with the family present will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Battle Creek. Condolences may be posted at www.christensenhuffman.com.

Born Dec. 15, 1921, in Ute, Lawrence Samuel Strait was the son of Christie "Dow" and Anna (Campbell) Strait. He grew up and received his education in Ute, graduating from Ute High School in 1938. Lawrence served in the U.S. Army during World War II, including 2½ years at Fort Warren, Wyo., and 15 months in the European Theater of Operations, where he earned three battle stars. He was a member of the 946th Quarter Masters Salvage and Repair Company. Following his tour of duty, Lawrence returned to Iowa where he began farming, first south of Ute, and later in the Mapleton, Danbury and Battle Creek areas.
On April 11, 1948, he was united in marriage to Ruth Mohr at the Lutheran parsonage in Ute. The couple was blessed with three daughters, Leila, Lana and Jan.
Lawrence was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek, Abby Post No. 442 of the American Legion and the V.F.W. He enjoyed polka music, attending the weekly senior citizens' dances, gardening and family.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth; three daughters, Leila (Tom) Lang of Lawton, Iowa, Lana (Art) Cruz of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Jan (Dan) Brosnahan of Logan, Iowa; six grandchildren, Chris (Sherry) Lang of Orange City, Iowa, Jamie (Brooke) Lang of Lawton, Cari (Ryan) Gehling of Sergeant Bluff, Megan (Jon) Armbrust of Omaha, Neb., Ryan Brosnahan of Ames, Iowa, and Eric Brosnahan of Logan; eight great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Karli, and Colin Lang of Orange City, Olivia, Madyson and Jordyn Lang of Lawton, Alexis Gehling of Sergeant Bluff and Addison Armbrust of Omaha; a brother, Loren (Julie) Strait of Charter Oak, Iowa; a sister, Mary Ann (Ron) Sorenson of Omaha; special friends, Roger, Joan and Dan Nielsen; and several nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Muriel Starcevic. |
