John, son of John Jasper and Eunice Britt (Keyes) Bayles, was born in Manhattan, Kansas on July 6, 1922, the third of four children. He married in Port Hueneme, California August 18, 1946 Penelope (Prescott) Adamson, daughter of Clarence Dean and Daphne Knapp (Parker) Prescott and widow of 2nd Lt. John David Adamson (Army Air Corps bomber pilot who was killed on a combat flight over Europe in the spring of 1944). She was born in Greenville, New Hampshire July 24, 1922 and died at home in Oxnard, California February 19, 1999. John's family moved to Balmorhea, Texas when he was two months old. He graduated from high school as salutatorian of his class, having been listed in Who's Who among High School Students in Texas. He began his college years at Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University), Lubbock, Texas, before joining the U.S. Navy as a seaman in August of 1942. He received a commission as Ensign, U.S. Naval Reserve in March 1944, serving aboard the U.S.S. Nields (DD616) as Communications Officer and Officer-of-the-Deck in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Pacific Theaters. Upon return to civilian life in July 1946, he resumed college where he graduated, with honors, with the degree of B.S. in Animal Science in June 1947. He had been Teaching Assistant to the Dean of Agriculture, as well as having held several student club offices, including the presidency of both the Aggie Club and the Block and Bridle Club, and being a member of Alpha Chi, the scholastic honor society, and of the Saddle Tramps. John and Pennie purchased a farm in Saragosa, Texas and farmed for three and a half years until a back injury forced a change. He subsequently attended agricultural graduate school at the University of California, Davis, but decided against completing the doctoral program suggested by his counselor. He was later employed by the U.S. Navy at Port Hueneme, California in the field of mechanical engineering at the Naval Civil Engineering Research and Evaluation Laboratory (later C.E.L.), with emphasis on ocean engineering projects. He was listed in Who's Who in America (Western Section) and the International Biographical Dictionary for several years in the late 1960's and 70's before his retirement. He was holder of seven patents and authored numerous engineering technical documents and engineering trade journal articles. One of his developments in the use of nuclear fuels for peaceful purposes, was eventually placed in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., after being exhibited in Europe. He was a charter member of the Marine Technology Society, a member of the Society of American Military Engineers, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He served in all offices of the local A.S.M.E. organization and served on the boards of the Los Angeles Section and Southern California Regional A.S.M.E. organizations. John was also a member of the International Platform Association at the invitation of the noted news personality, Lowell Thomas, and was a Life Fellow of the International Oceanographic Foundation. Raised a Methodist, he became an elder and teacher in the United Presbyterian Church, U.S.A., but eventually became disaffected with the liberal leaning of that church body, and together with his wife, Penelope, and son, Britt, was a moving force in the establishment of the congregation of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, in Oxnard, California. He became the first ordained elder of that local body, Covenant of Grace Church, which has a strong Reformed tradition. He also continued his association with the Naval Reserve and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Commander, with designator as Engineering Duty Officer. Politically, he was a staunch conservative Republican. John became an avid genealogist after his retirement and traced some family lines to early 300 A.D. He also wrote and published his "Memoirs" at the request of his daughter, Keri. The memoirs describe many of the activities of the family and of his early years. In the fall of 2004, after 52 years in Oxnard, John moved to Waipahu, Oahu, Hawaii to reside with his son Britt's family. Again he was privileged to help establish another Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Redeemer Presbyterian Church, in Pearl City, Oahu. On July 7, 2012 he celebrated his 90th birthday with all his family, and many church, neighborhood and walking friends present. Beside his parents and wife, John was preceded in death by two older brothers, Lawrence Gordon Bayles and George Vincent Bayles, and by his younger sister, Ruth Alene (Bayles) Burchard. John is survived by his four childern: Keri (Bayles) and husband, Thomas Lockwood Cordell, of High Point, North Carolina; John Dean and wife, Andrea Esther (Krat) Bayles, of Leucadia, California; Britt Clark and wife, Betty Ann (Fukutomi) Bayles, of Waipahu, Oahu, Hawaii; and Meredith (Bayles) Sherman of Pasadena, California; grandchildren: Matthew Bayles Cordell, Krista Cordell, Kathleen (Cordell) and husband, Timothy Robert Arscott-Mills, Ashley Elizabeth Bayles and husband, Todd Richard Butts, Amber Joi Sherman, Chelsea Cordell, Alyssa Brianne Loomis Sherman, Allison Robin Bayles, Amy Kerilyn (Sherman) and husband James Edward Snyder, Britt Yuji Bayles, and Micaela Erisa Bayles; and great-grandchildren: Rylie Noelle Brooks, McKenzie Analise Slimbach, James Cordell Arscott, Jaezon Ryuu Bayles Shigemasa, Robert Lockwood Arscott, Ethan Edward Snyder and Tristan Dean Sprewell.
